I think some of the 2x4's from Lowes would sprout if stuck in the ground.

Many trees produce suckers, which are simply new growth out of old trees or roots when the tree has blown over in a windstorm and the like.

As a general rule, suckering applies to hardwoods/deciduous trees. Trees that have surface roots, such as ficus and liquidamber, sucker more than other trees such as pines.

Actually, the "third tree" is the older of what you see there. It was probably blown over in a wind storm which is why it "grows ... along the ground." Trees don't like to grow horizontally, so once it fell over, it proceeded to grow upwards and fork. Since trees are pretty smart about knowing whether or not they are in the wrong position, it decided that it needed a couple of other trees (the two uprights on the left) to ensure that it survived. Those two uprights are "suckers" of the original tree.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what could have caused this deformity?
It may have had another fallen tree leaning agaisnt the sapling. The fallen tree has rotted and fallen away, leaving this warped tree.Burton
