It's "offen." I hear "off ten" on tv every time it's said. Don't English teachers, writers, editors, and directors of today know the correct pronunciation?

From dictionary.com

"Often was pronounced with a t -sound until the 17th century, when a pronunciation without the [t] came to predominate in the speech of the educated, in both North America and Great Britain, and the earlier pronunciation fell into disfavor. Common use of a spelling pronunciation has since restored the [t] for many speakers, and today [aw-fuh n] and [awf-tuh n] or [of-uh n] and [of-tuh n] ] exist side by side. Although it is still sometimes criticized, often with a [t] is now so widely heard from educated speakers that it has become fully standard once again.

From dictionary.com br br "Often was pronoun... (show quote)

"Offen" was taught throughout the school systems in the 50's and 60's. I consider it a sign of poor up-bringing, such as when I hear somebody pronounce the state "Illinoise." Do you have anything to backup your thesis that "off ten" is now acceptable English other than the fact that it is hear "offen?"

If, indeed, "off ten," is now acceptable, I would see that as indicative of the general decline in the use of our language.

Oh, heck, Dave.....let's ratch it up a notch. The Jews conspiracy to take down the twin towers on 9/11 is indicative among their other hijinks of just how offten they will attempt to subject their will upon other nations to rule the world.

I thought you might be missing LP by now.
