Truly super pics. Green with envy here.
Now, I have a Pileated story. We have been visited on occasion by this magnificent crow-sized, red-topped pecker. I hoped to take a photo of one when he visited. One day I came home from shopping, heard the distinctive thunk-thunk-thunk of a pileated working away and a great fuss from smaller birds. I rushed into the house, grabbed my camera, and what I thought was my 55-250mm lens. I've taken great bird pictures with it at a distance of about 50 feet, about how high up the bird was in the tree. Instead it was an 18-200. That proved to be not enough reach. He was in a tree no more than 10 feet from the house. I took numerous shots but none was very good. After considerable post processing I got a barely acceptable picture. I informed the nature columnist in our daily county paper. He came over and interviewed me and published an article with the picture -- in black and white! I'm attaching a copy of said picture to show what I'm talking about. I must admit the quality is not up to yours!

I'm becoming a real trooper when it comes to going out in frigid weather to photograph birds! Only because I've figured out that between the extreme cold and the snow...they are actively pursuing food ;-)

Wowzers ! Late to this party - stunning work, thanks for sharing. If you can get this close, maybe you do not need a 1.4X ?
I'm late to these but happy I didn't miss this set. Really well done Jan.

Looks as if You had a great opportunity and took full advantage of it! I will suffice it to simply say: It can't get much better than this! Crisp and sharp with very dramatic range of poses detail one can usually only imagine! WOW!!! Sonny

Can you handle another WOW!!!! Beautiful.
Absolutely beautiful. Just be sure it sticks to the tree, though. I had one tear up a wooden window frame and some siding on the house.
