With new Nikon SLR camera came the standard nylon strap. Looking for a better new one. My old one is shot, the covering on the outside is delaminating. I liked it because it was stretchy (dense foam rubber inside with slick nylon outside) and adsorbed the shocks caused by the camera weight. But it was a bit narrow. Came with a couple of pockets for my cf cards which was handy. Don't want to spend a fortune on the new one but can spend a few bucks for one that will last. Guess you could say I want a Mercedes for the price of a VW.

Paaflyer, welcome to the Hog!
If you join Canon Professional Services, they will send you a strap just like the one you described.
Your Nikon friends will no longer talk to you, but YOU'LL be happy!

I use the Op Tech mentioned above on one camera and the Peak Design "Slide" on my other one. https://peakdesign.com/store/slide
I really like them both and neither of these require you to use the bottom screw hole on your camera like some brands do.

Many years ago, when I was a more active shooter, I used a strap that was only a few inches long. It was just long enough that I could slip my hand in it. It laid tightly across the back of my hand and gave me a firm grip on the camera (Nikon F3).

I've been happy with an Optech sling strap on my D5200, it was recommended to me here. I carry the D5200 with a Sigma 18-300 and occasionally a heavy Sigma 150-500 lens with it. I also wrapped a thin strip of Velcro around the clip as extra insurance. You can use 2 clips if you like, but it does a "quick draw" from the bottom of the strap to shooting level with one clip very nicely. There has never been any sign that the clip would fail and our respected friend MT Shooter claims no one has ever documented a clip failure. Optech sells the Velcro straps too, but I'm a computer repair guy and almost every laptop AC adapter comes with one to bundle up the power cords. One of these worked great. Good luck.

I use two dog leashes bought very cheaply in Woolmart. Immensely strong and rustproof. I keep my accessories in a couple of cotton socks held onto the leash with clothes pegs. my socks are orange but you may have different taste in socks to me. Socks accept all your camera bits and pieces readily and you still have plenty of room for a small crack pipe and a couple of spliffs. With dog leashes and socks for storage security leave you well alone so your stash will never be found.
Hope that helps my friend.
