How do you lock and unlock?
By the little switch, it goes up and down, down locks the wheel in place.
I would return the lens and get one that will AF with your camera. Keh.com, B&H, and Adorama are very good for used lenses.

Did she advise cleaning the contacts on the lens?
I've seen various methods proposed for that on UHH. You might see what the search feature brings up.
I found the operating manual on the Nikon web site. It says to do the following to allow full auto exposure and auto focus.
1. Unlock the lock lever by moving the lock lever so the white dot and orange dot are not aligned.
2. Move the aperture ring so f32 is aligned with the green dot on the lens.
3. Lock the lever by aligning the Orange dot and white dot.
See the screen shot of the lens below

Yep - thats standard for pretty much any AF-D lens going to a 3000 or 5000 series. But the D3000's and 5000's won't meter with it because there is no aperture index ring on the camera. And of course the AF will not function since the lens has no focusing motor built in, nor does the camera.

Incorrect! AF-D lens will meter on all the D5xxx and D3xxx body, only no AF!
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility-lens.htmRead this from Kenrockwell.
My mistake... AF-D will not focus, any chipped lens should meter, but I was using an old series E lens that will not meter on a 3000-5000 series, but will on a 7000 series...
Good catch!
I have one of these lens and they fine on my d300 f100 d70 d6006 . just make sure that the aperture lock is in the right position . If that dose not work then you have a problem with the lens. You can google and get a chart on. Nikon camera to lens compatibility
