Lock it on f/32, connect to camera while camera is OFF, turn on camera, go to manual mode.

See if that makes a difference. It is a MANUAL focus lens on a D3100 also.

Nope

Next step would be to try it on another D3000 series or D5000 series camera, if it does not work there then the lens may have a connection problem.

Might even be worth going to a camera store with lens in hand and see what they can tell you.

That's my next step, a 45 mile trip. (That's what I get for living in the sticks)

Ouch! Might be best to take your camera along in case they won't just plug it into a Nikon demo unit to test.

It's a D series lens. Great lens but it has to be used on a camera body with a focus motor. Would have to go to a D7000 or above to use it autofocus. It's a great lens though.

I have a Nikon D3100. I bought a used 70-300m ED lens (non VR, from another UHH and he's aware of the problem). When I attached it to the camera I got an error message "Lock lens aperture ring @ minimum arperture".

That minimum aperture thing can be a nuisance. I recently put my 35-70mm on my D610, and I got an EE error message. It took me a while to realize I had to set the aperture back to F/22. There is a little locking switch I had to move. Do you have a locking switch like that on your lens? Maybe it's the position of the switch that's confusing the camera and lens.

I've tried that also, the numbers on the dial go 32,22,16,11,8,5.6 & 4. The only one that will lock is 32. Thanks

This is AF-D, D type Nikon lens have only 4 contact points and no built in focus motor, it also call "Screw type focusing", It needs the built in motor from your camera body to drive this screw to focus. Since your Nikon body doesn't has focusing motor, so it won't AF.
The "ERR" is normal warning for this D type lens, it has to be set the min. aperture and locked when mounting on the body, otherwise the camera won't function at all.
This kind of D-type Nikon lens won't AF on Nikon series D3xxx; D5000; D60; D40.

Edit: If it still generates an error on the D3100, you may want to try it on another D3000 series or D5000 series before assuming the lens has an issue.

It was mine. Used it with a D70 and D200 until I bought my VR of the same size. Never had a problem with it and never had to do anything special.

I'm going to head up to a camera shop next week. Will see what they can do, I need a new camera bag anyway.

Did that, msg still there. Dove into the user's manual for both, put camera in manual mode, nothing, same msg.

I called Nikon (the lady I got was very nice & helpful up to a point), she gave me a list of what to try. Including: removing Memory Card & battery, wait, replace and then & download update. Same error msg.

One of the things she suggested might be wrong was that I was using an "un-authorized" memory card (WTH? never had that problem before with any camera).

The only difference between the lens I have and this one (except for it being non VR) is the contacts points. My newer ones have 7 points, the older one has only 4 and is marked Nikon ED. Anyway that could be the source of the problem? (The newer lenes are marked Nikon DX)

I also cleaned the contact points because you never know.

Any more suggestions? Or am I missing a BFO moment? I think I've put everything down I've tried.

I see no reason why that lens would not work on your camera other then the AF. Try to wiggle the lens when mounted, maybe the connection is bad.

I have several AF-D lenses that I used on a D3000 & D5100 and now on a D7100 - no problems at all on the D7100, however on the D5100 and D3000 I had to lock the aperture on f/22 to eliminate the EE error and of course focus manually.

Nothing wrong at all with AF-D lenses, but because of the electronics in the camera they could have some quirks to know about to get them to operate.

I had an older AF D lens that did the same thing. I unlocked the aperture ring and rotated it several times back & forth and then set to f32 and locked it. No error message then.

I have to correct my own reply here. Some or few Nikon D type lenses are also AF-s lens too, like the 300mm f4.0 AF-s D IF prime. It will AF on those D3xxx or D5xxx body.
You need the AF-s lens which has built in focus motor.

How do you lock and unlock?
