You're right. I need a 70-300mm VR lens I guess, but I do want an AF lens. I found one for around $500, a little over that actually. My Birthday is in less than a month, so hoping I get one then.

Why not the AF-S NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR ? Auto focus, VR, ED glass. Actually a really good lens for $400.00 new. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/729938-USA/Nikon_2197_AF_S_NIKKOR_55_300mm_f_4_5_5_6G.html

What's the difference between the 70-300 and the 55-300 lens? Sorry, I am so new at this. I have only had my DLSR for about a month or so.

Sorry, haven't been on here in a few days. I have been remodeling the family room - new paint, new floors, new patio door, etc. etc. What a job! Anyone want to help?

Thanks DonB. I will check them out. I was just thinking maybe I should get a 70-300 af VR instead of a 55-300. I don't really need the 55 since I have it on 2 lenses now. What do you think?

Hmmm, can anyone tell me what those lenses are? Conversion or auxiliary lenses? What are they used for? Are they expensive? Can I buy one to zoom in, get up close? Thanks

Close up can two diffent things. Macro shooting whereby you can photograph small subjects or telephoto which magnifies the image of a distant subject. Which are you looking for? I thought you wanted to shoot birds. If so the longer lenses are better. Help us out by answering a couple of ?'s

How much is your budget?
What will the primary subject be for shooting? Be specific.
Do you have a tripod?

Here is what the 28-300 can do. I just shot these yesterday in the back yard. It is a decent lens and offers many focal lengths.
