I am looking for an AF-S 400mm f/2.8G ED VR, or an AF-S 500mm f/4G ED VR or an AF-S 600mm f/4G ED VR lens - reasonably priced, or a good Nikon Nikor telephoto VR lens for a Nikon D5100.

And you could buy 6 of them for less than the price of the cheapest of these three lenses, as well as actually use it regularly!
But you have picked out some mighty fine glass. I long for the 600mm F4 myself, but lack something called money, LOTS of money! LOL

I just know I want a good VR Nikkor lens that is telephoto or super telephoto for getting some good shots of birds. I love to take photos of birds, and other wildlife.

Not quite sure if you're interested, I have a Nikor 800mm f/5.6 MF in excellent condition with the case if you're looking for a long range lens.

Hate to break it to you, but if you plan on getting BIF you might want to start with a 70-300mmVR lens in the $500 range or 300 f/4 afs in the $1800 range. Much lighter and you can beat it up a little learning how to shoot birds and wildlife. Ever watch a guy handhold a 400mm VR 11 lb lens plus 5 lb camera and get a good shot??. Just saying I would go smaller before I went bigger.

You're right. I need a 70-300mm VR lens I guess, but I do want an AF lens. I found one for around $500, a little over that actually. My Birthday is in less than a month, so hoping I get one then.

Why not the AF-S NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR ? Auto focus, VR, ED glass. Actually a really good lens for $400.00 new. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/729938-USA/Nikon_2197_AF_S_NIKKOR_55_300mm_f_4_5_5_6G.html

Sigma makes a Nikon specific lens. MT Shooter has a 150-500mm which goes for around $1,000.00 at Adorama or B&H Photo and I have a 50-500mm that goes for about $1600.00. I love mine and I know MT Shooter highly recommends his. They both have OS which is Sigma's VR lens they are both AF. Check them out and see what you think.
