You must have the patience of a Saint, Joe. Or, you had a steak necklace on. It sure was nice of them to look right into the camera.

Same thing has happened to me since I got a Sigma 150-500. I'm an automatic expert. It's kind of cool at first, but it does take time away from your photography...

I was fortunate that the questions didn't intrude on the photography, but I can see where it could be a problem.

I've had similar experiences at the zoo. The size of the crowd is another factor. Aside from better light, that's another good reason to go early or late, when the crowd is smaller.

I like to make my trips there on Fridays because of the small crowds

It just kind of crossed my mind. Had to same something inane because I get the same response when I use my Sig 150-500. I'm careful not to say too much due to the fact that I'm so far from being an expert that it's pathetic. The less I say,the less I can give myself away! It does make me try to be slower and a little more deliberate. As soon as the weather clears, I'll be hard at work trying to sharpen my skills and hopefully my pictures.

Being in the northeast this time of year has got to be little rough. Stay warm and good shooting.

No steak necklace, but there were a couple dozen middle school aged kids there that probably looked like little steaks to the lions. As for me, I spent two hours at the lion exhibit and shot 130 frames.

I've been a member of the San Diego Zoo and the Safari Park for the last three years. Between the two parks I make about 10 trips a year. Until last Friday all those trips were made with a Nikon D7000 with a 55-300mm lens. In all those trips nobody else with a camera has ever asked me a photography related question. On Friday I go to the Safari Park to shoot photos of the lion cubs with my new Sigma 150-600 Sport and Nikon D3 mounted on a tripod with gimbal mount (read big rig). Not ten minutes after setting up I have people asking me all kinds of questions from what aperture should I use on this shot (that depends) to how much did you pay for that lens (more than I could afford) to how come my camera isn't working (turned out it was a bad memory card). That's never happened to me before. It was a little strange but flattering at the same time.

Sounds as though you enjoyed yourself. You were in a real learning experience. Might you have taken another step up the ladder of photography? Nice story to keep. You did nothing to improve the situation of the third animal in this great shot. What a neat story, unless it is of that animal.

When the big lens comes out people take notice. I shoot a Nikon D-800 with a 24-70 2.8 mounted most of the time. I know it is not a really big lens but the lens hood makes it look huge. The flame lens wrap also makes it stand out. So what I am saying is I get a lot of questions with a some what small lens. Enjoy the questions. Even though most are I bet that camera takes some good pictures.

Well, the shots were good and plus the D7000 lets you zoom into your photo with the + key on left side. So while he was looking ( I held camera ) I zoomed in and he turned his head to me and said IT'S SHARP FOR THAT DISTANCE. Very nice feeling.

Thanks for the link. I missed it the other day. Great shots. Also, if the drool from looking those long lense pictures shorts out my phone, you will owe me a new phone. Hope to own a nice lense like that some day.

Very good picture. On walking round a Stately Home taking pictures on an outing with my camera club I kept being asked if I was taking pictures for a magazine, wish I had been...
