Hi fellow Hogs,

I'm in the process of buying a new camera but am not sure what to get.
My choice is between the Sony A7 and the Nikon D610. The problem for me are the lenses. Sony is more expensive and has fewer lenses to choose from but is lighter, Nikon on the other hand has many lenses and cheaper (at least some of them) but is bulkier and heavier.
IQ wise I suppose they are in the same league.

What would you choose?

Thanks for your help.

No one can make that decision for you. You already seem to know the important differences. Follow your instincts and choose one.

I would suggest, if it's possible for you, that you go to a cameral store that handles both brands and actually handle the cameras you have in mind. I have found that some cameras just feel better in my hands than others.

Work out the final weight of ALL the kit you will be carrying. If there's only a pound or two in it, probably best to go for the Nikon.

Portability is good for everyday use. The heavier the kit is, you will less likely to use it.

Unless of course you have a specific use for the heavier kit and lenses.

I know I have forsaken my older and bigger SLR for a lighter and smaller DSLR.

But as said, you know what you use a camera for, and have to make that decision yourself.

Personally, the Sony's I have seen are great cameras, but tend to think they are over complicated. Nikon on the other hand is a proper camera..................

I lugged a D800e around for a while and now am enjoying the lightweight Sony A7R. True about the lens selection but it really depends on what your favorite things are too shoot.

MJ,

What, pray tell, is a "proper" camera? And, why don't you have one?

It has been good advise to recommend to you to go to a store and try both models. Nikon will give you more flexibility with more lenses to choose from but it will be considerably heavier than the Sony A7.
Only you can make the choice based on your needs.

Personally, I would go for Nikon, I like the feel and that is important. I also "feel" Nikons button and menu layout is more intuitive. Follow the advice above and then choose the one right for you. good luck. ;)

I can honestly tell you that weight has never been one of my considerations when purchasing photographic equipment (with the exception of considering the weight of my equipment when purchasing the Nest Gimbal head). Maybe it should be, but it hasn't been. For me, weight implies more, especially when it comes to lenses. Good glass is heavier.

It has been recommended to go to a store and hold these units for comparison, and that works. But, from the comfort of your keyboard, go to each site and find the technical specs for the units that interest you. Included in those specs will be the weight. Do the arithmetic. I'll bet you'll find that the difference in weight between the two setups is not nearly as critical as you may be thinking. Just a thought.
