I got a Nikon, new from a store and a (NON NIKON LENS) The camera never worked. I called the store and they said bring it back for a new one. I called Nikon as I might as well see if it is me. They blamed the CARD and then the 75% Charge and finally offered to fix it, not replace it. I now use a Canon that I got when I took the Nikon back to the store.

Was the store an authorized Nikon reseller? Could you have been sold a gray market Nikon possibly which has no Nikon warranty in this country?

YES I have been told about Nikon Svs. If you ain't a pro they don't care. I have been a serious picture taker since the early 50's in Libya and was advised that if I want a pocket point and shoot the Nikon ?? for about $250.00 was a good one. I know that all brands of cameras can make a defective camera but the fact that Nikon Svs. would not accept the problem to be Nikon problem cut me off. I now, when teaching photograph will tell use Canon or Nikon but if the Nikon is bade you are S .

Untrue. If you buy a Nikon or Canon from an UNAUTHORISED seller and get "GRAY" market you may be SOL for warranty outside of the store that sold it to you.

Read it and weep....Nikon or Canon - samey same pretty much.

The best thing is know what you are buying and where you are getting it. You pays your money and you takes your chances.

So, because of the remark from one tech you make a decision that everything must be junk? Good lesson to impart on students.

You missed the point. The camera is a large authored Nikon, Canon ect. ect. Dealer. The problem and I was told now by others that Nikon Service is not a service. I have called Canon Service as well and the bend over to be helpful. Too bad Nikon has not reached that point.

What store?

I am sure there are horror stories from people with many different brands of camera's.

I really think I would have simply exchanged the camera at the store instead of wasting days on the phone. But thats just me.

After re-reading this thread, I have come to the conclusion that this entire situation doesn't make sense to me.

You have an autofocus camera and an autofocus lens. The lens is NOT Nikon but they blame the memory card, not the lens? This does not sound reasonable. The card does not have any part in the functioning of the camera or lens; both of which will operate perfectly WITHOUT ANY CARD IN THE CAMERA!

A defective or non-compatible lens, on the other hand can affect all functions of the camera.

Why you didn't just return to the dealer and let them fix your problem, I don't understand. That is their responsibility and you would probably have had a resolution in a few minutes rather than a few days.

I think you need to re-read Nikon DonB's post.
He said to do a full re-format OF THE CARD on the computer, then do a format in the camera.
The first absolutely, positively, aligns all the 1's and 0's.
The second absolutely, positively, sets the "virgin" card to work with the camera.

And I seriously doubt a card could break a camera. Not store data correctly, I could see.
But break the auto-focus? I think I smell smoke being blown....

Thanks for jumping in Sonny. I didn't think I needed to make my explanation any simpler(idiot proof), thanks man. I owe you one.

I know now. I wont touch a Nikon. I truly think that because I had a point and shoot camera they could treat me like an idiot. The final phone conversation was that the camera had a problem and I should send it in for repair. I said it should be replaced and they told me, no, they will repair it. The don't replace them. I am sure that this is not the company but, it is the people we must work with when we need help.

All I use are Transcend. NEVER had a problem with any of them. I have about a dozen of them in different sizes and speeds.

Do a FULL Reformat on your computer. Then format it again in the camera. If the problem persists, contact the vendor who sold you the camera for a replacement. Transcend cards have a lifetime guarantee.

When I contacted Nikon. I was asked if I formatted the Transcend in the computer. I told them Yes. I was then told NEVER to format memory cards in the computer. That could be the problem. Is this true or not?

No the store that sold me the D7100 was Cameta. They told me the card would work fine and Nikon can not test all cards. They get a kick back. I still don't understand why this card could void the Nikon warranty and they still sale it together with my order?

I purchased my refurbished D7100 also with a Transcend SD, in my case, a 32GB. I still use it although not exclusively because I purchased a faster card which is my primary.

I would sure like to hear an explanation as to how a storage medium could affect the performance or damage anything.

Have you tried using a different card and lens?

No the lens is brand new too-Sigma 18-300 and I will try a new approved card by Nikon. They told me if I didn't use one of their approved cards it could void the warranty of the new refurbished D7100. I reset the camera back to factory settings and it is working at the present time.

That might be the only true thing that that technician told you that day. You never format the card you using it a camera by using the computer. You always format the card in the camera, often a low level format.

Formatting that card in the computer doesn't hurt the card or the camera but it doesn't format the card the way the camera wants to operate. It's an easy correction, just put the card back in the camera and format it there.
