After using my refurbished D7100 the auto focus stopped working after 2 months of use. I called Nikon and they help me rest the camera to factory settings. With my camera I received a Transcend 64 gb memory card. Nikon told me that this card wasn't approved by Nikon and could cause camera damage and void warranty. This might me one reason causing the autofocus to stop working.
Question-Does anyone else have trouble with the Transcend memory card? Why would an online Camera store sell me a memory card that will void Nikon warranty? This online camera store is one that is in New York and recommended by many photographers on this site.

I have used many transcend cards in my D3000, D5100 & in my D7100 - never had an issue, other then they are a little slow for me.

Not sure how it could effect focusing. Thats a new one.

I would suspect you mistakenly changed something that caused AF to stop or change how it work, resetting to factory defaults just turned it back on.

I use Transcend, so far without a problem.

Although, come to think of it, I am having some trouble with memory and focus - could my age have anything to do with it or maybe it is Transcend?

After cataract surgery last year my focus got better - so far memory hasn't been a problem - YET! :)

All I use are Transcend. NEVER had a problem with any of them. I have about a dozen of them in different sizes and speeds.

Do a FULL Reformat on your computer. Then format it again in the camera. If the problem persists, contact the vendor who sold you the camera for a replacement. Transcend cards have a lifetime guarantee.

I think its meant to fully reformat the memory card while its attached to your computer, not reformat the computer.

I also use transcend with no issues.

I purchased my refurbished D7100 also with a Transcend SD, in my case, a 32GB. I still use it although not exclusively because I purchased a faster card which is my primary.

I would sure like to hear an explanation as to how a storage medium could affect the performance or damage anything.

Have you tried using a different card and lens?

The following is a list of approved memory cards for the Nikon D7100 Digital Single Lens Reflex camera. These cards have been tested and approved for use with the D7100.

The D7100 uses listed SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards. Memory cards with an SD Speed Class rating of 6 or faster are recommended for recording movies. Movie recording may stop unexpectedly when memory cards with lower Speed Class rating are used.

I think you need to re-read Nikon DonB's post.
He said to do a full re-format OF THE CARD on the computer, then do a format in the camera.
The first absolutely, positively, aligns all the 1's and 0's.
The second absolutely, positively, sets the "virgin" card to work with the camera.

And I seriously doubt a card could break a camera. Not store data correctly, I could see.
But break the auto-focus? I think I smell smoke being blown....

I can think of no reason why a memory card would cause AF to stop working. When you call Nikon all the tech did was talk you through resetting everything back to original settings. This allowed your AF to start working? It had to be something you changed in the settings that affected your autofocus. Not the card!

I shoot Canon but have run into things like this on occasion with their technicians. If they don't have the answer they work around things and have you set everything back to factory specs. What it boils down to is they really don't know.

I wouldn't worry about the card. Keep on shooting and have fun.

They have not tested every card, and never will, the list only shows what cards they tested, which amounts to a handful.

I have really really cheap no name cards and expensive cards. They all work fine big difference is size and speed.

I got a Nikon, new from a store and a (NON NIKON LENS) The camera never worked. I called the store and they said bring it back for a new one. I called Nikon as I might as well see if it is me. They blamed the CARD and then the 75% Charge and finally offered to fix it, not replace it. I now use a Canon that I got when I took the Nikon back to the store.
