A friend of mine suggested I use Gimp instead of photoshop.....my question is which one is better?

If you haven't purchased Photoshop, try downloading The Gimp first. It is Open Source software, so it won't cost you anything.

From my experience, both have a bit of a learning curve, but both are incredibly powerful programs.

Gimp will do most of what Photoshop will do, especially the versions before CS5. Gimp is free. Both have a large learning curve but will do things no other editing programs will do. There are loads of learning tutorials out there for both.

No comparison ... photoshop is better.
Gimp does about 90% of the things.
A better program than Gimp would be photoshop elements 10 .. It does perhaps 95% of what photoshop can do plus there is a guided feature that is very helpful.

Comparing Gimp to Photoshop is like comparing a VW to a BMW .. both will get you where you want to go ...one will save money... the other is flashy and well built.

I think VW owns BMW. Whatever that means.

I have tried Gimp. I vastly prefer Photoshop.

what i did i downloaded gimp watched video's how to use it then tried picasa played with it an watched utube about using it. then downloaded photoshop elements10 30 day free trial an did the utube thing with it same with lightroom an the utube thing. glad i did gimp first sorta broke me in using editor programs an wasn't rushed by no 30 day limit trial. but what i wished i had done was watch utube vid's before i downloaded the elements. about everything adobe has has a free 30 trial. an really you can have 6 - 8 months or longer before you buy if you do buy. but to me lightroom is little more complicated than elements. probly be next year before i play with photosop cs5 videos on it looks like a deep well. i di like the lens setting on lightroom to self adjust to better image acording to what lens you used on each picture.

It is really all about money.

If you are very low budget go Gimp, what an unfortunate name, but no shame.

Picasa is very easy, fun and free. I use it all the time despite having the latest Photoshop and PS Elements and Mac iPhoto.

Photoshop Elements is a great price point and excellent for everyone except the spenders and experts. Also it loads on both Mac and PC. I use both.

Up to date Photoshop fits my spendy ways. I am no expert, but I have been buying upgrades for 6 versions over 12 years and will upgrade to the latest next month. But you do need to decide Mac or PC. Boo!

I am old and need to use any advantage I can afford. I ride a very lightweight and expensive bicycle not because I am an athlete, but because I need every advantage to even keep the young and healthy in sight.

Then we have Capture One. Strictly extremely high budget Pros only. Google it. LOL
