Anyone here have experience with Getty images or other photo publishers?

Just wanted to get some feed back on how it works, and if it's worth it/ real, etc.

Cheers,
Rachel

Getty and other stock image houses tend to be very selective and go to you rather than the other way around. The whole business of stock photography is in trouble these days because there are so many places to get images for next to nothing that the highend stockhouses can't or don't compete. It really is a situation of supply far and away exceeding demand.

I'm not surprise with all of us amatur photographers around that supply has out weight the demand.

I had seen on Flickr where a few people had mention that they have photos with Getty and another stock photography house. I was surprise, becaused I did not feel there photo's (at least the ones on there Flickr account) were very impressive.

I guess my ego got the best of me, and I thought to myself, "what the heck", maybe I could have my photo's listed in a stock house if they can.

Rachel,
I don't know why you are surprised, Getty hires lots of photographers for cheap. Now do they get great shots, many don't but what they do get is access. They get priority positioning because of who they shoot for. I see photos all the time listed in Mags, papers, flyers as Getty photo/Name. Some I would be embarrassed at having my name associated with it, others a far different story. As with all photography it is in the eye of the beholder.

I've been able to sell a few photos that I posted on Flickr. The trick is to get noticed through the use of tags and descriptive captions which get picked up by the various search engines.

Getty knows who is good and reliable. Who they can count on and they know what has market value and who photographs that which has market value. They pay for what they get and they also get the copyright and file it for the photographs they have in the collection.

If you are consistently very good and get your stuff published on a consistent basis they will contact you.

I was lucky or some would say not so lucky. I was in SE Asia in the very early 60s and free lanced for Blackstar as soon as I got out good bye Blackstar....

In short, don't call us we will call you!

A few years ago I got into the stock trade. Getting accepted was a chore but persistance paid off. I now contribute to iStock (exclusievly) and I like them ... they are owned by Getty. I found that I learned a great deal from shooting stock. Will you get rich? Go get a paper route or work at McDonalds. There are some great photogs that make a living from stock... so give it a shot. Nothing to lose

thanks for the comment. I'll try, but it looks like Getty has stop taking photo's from Flickr. Now they just have people whom comp Flickr and tried and find the good photographers. I guess they just had to many summitions of photo's they could not use or look at.

Here's my link to Flickr if you want to take a look. Any comments or suggestion, no matter how painful are welcomed.

I have sold a couple using iStock and Getty. Not getting rich by any means, but it's nice when I do get a little extra $$.
