Hey Folks, would appreciate your input, I am beyond "budget" Im plain ol broke! lol, I have a d3000, and have about $1,500 to invest. I was going to upgrade to a d7000. But, a friend suggested that the money would be better spent on lights, ie; decent flash and diffuser, a couple of lamps and a couple of soft boxes and a reflector. what do you think?

If you're handy and have access to tools and a workspace, you can make some of your own lighting accessories. Do a Google search for DIY photography gear. One of the first sites to pop up will be this one which is very helpful: http://www.diyphotography.net/

I don't think you could go wrong buying newer model Nikon Speedlights.

When building & purchasing lighting gear, it wouldn't hurt to set aside a small part of your budget for a class or workshop if possible. And be prepared to take a lot of photos as you learn. Your friend may be a good mentor in learning to use the gear. If not him, find someone with the experience to guide you.

Your D3000 should do a good job for you. Do you have a good lens for portrait work? As mentioned a couple flash units and and ubrella would be pretty inexpensive and get you off to a good start and still keep you within your budget.

I guess I need to know what "plain ol broke means". In my earlier years when I was broke I didn't have to worry about how to spend $1500.00. LOL
