I agree. But, I would like to see camera makers put the money spent on video and use it to improve the still photo capabilities.

I agree. If I wanted a video camera, I'd buy one. If I wanted a cell phone I'd buy one. Fortunately, they have cellphone cameras, but no camera cellphones, yet.

Product design and release is driven by what the market wants, not what a few photographers, in this case, want. A few of the good still photographers that I know have switched to doing a mix of photography and video because that is what others are offering and what the paying public is demanding.

I don't see it getting better, but probably worse.

I agree with what MT Shooter and RMM have said. If you don't want to use the feature, then don't. But, as RMM said, there might be a situation where video is used and, even so, some cameras nowadays will allow you to capture stills while filming and there is also the capability to extract stills from the movies later on. Do an internet search and look for movies that are being filmed using DSLR's....you'll be surprised, and this falls right in line with what MT Shooter said about the quality found in DSLR's compared to camcorders.

Is there anyone here that uses all the features on their camera? If you don't need it, ignore it. It would be MORE costly to make another entire line of D800 or D7000 sans video....

I understand everyone's points of view, but...if you have a High Definition TV, have you ever hooked up your video enabled DSLR using a micro HDMI cable? Its the jack next to the mini USB on my D7000. Have you ever seen your pictures on a BIG SCREEN? Try it, you might like it!

Right! And lets get rid of that useless autofocus, too. I never trusted it. Vibration reduction? Out! Speedlights? Digital? Out! Out! And film, too--I want to shoot glass plates, with gunpowder for illumination

Simpler menu, lower price, focus on photo features.

No video? That's exactly why I love my D700!

I have had my camera over six months and have yet to use the video on it.

I don't see that it hurts anything. It is one little red button.

I suspect that the demand for video helps drive some of the DSLR performance improvements we are seeing such as faster image processing (and thus frame rate), lower ISO, "live view", and so forth. Thus even if we don't use video we get the advantages of the technology it drives.

So I'm for it.

The same goes for Canon.

I just bought the Canon 5D Mk II. I don't care a thing about taking videos. I wish they'd have invested the production cost into a faster FPS or other feature that could have enhanced my still shots! It's a great camera, but it will be under-utilized by this photographer.

I just reciently went to my stepsons hockey game. I shoot with a Canon 7d. I got some great stills but also the hd video of moving action in a hockey game or any sport is a totally different and exciting media. I'm glad I didn't have to bring two cameras. Especially when it's possible to get stills in video by just pressing the shutter.
My Satern has a manuel shift mode. I,ve never used it and it still gets me where I'm going.

One question, which I can't answer, is: How much improvement could the camera manufacturers put in for still photography by leaving video out? Answer is: probably very little. One less button, a couple of menu items, some programming. The sensor isn't going to benefit by getting bigger. It's a matter of trade-offs, including marketing. How many more, or fewer, cameras will we sell without video? If we leave video out, what do we put in? Anything? Do we raise or lower price? Effrant pointed out that there are features that some of you never use. I know that's true for me, whether it's in the camera or the software I use to edit what comes out of the camera, or the computer that runs the software. You use what you need, what you understand, and what you're comfortable with. And manufacturers have to struggle with adding features and keeping it simple enough so that you don't need a separate college degree (sorry, Rick) just to take a picture.

its all software the video doesn't add to the cost but drives sales. now i would never use video features because to paraphrase Dr Lenord "Bones" McCoy " Damit Jim Im a photographer not a cinematographer!!!" its bad enough have to compete with ansel adams, now the camera manufactureres want me to compete with steven spielberg too? lol

Echo's of the past: "Color will never catch on"....."Digital is a fad". Video may catch on or it may not. But, what is wrong with giving it a chance?
