So if a person who shoots Nikon or Canon wanted to get a mirrorless as a second camera for certain types of photography, would their Canon-Nikon lenses fit on it .. or would they have to buy all new lenses?

One can buy adapters to use Canon or Nikon lenses with Sony mirrorless cameras. However, one has to choose wisely to select adapters that allow camera control of autofocus and aperture. I have Sony A7R, a full frame mirrorless, and am using my Canon lenses with it by recently having purchased a Commlite adapter on Amazon. So far, so good.

Thanks so much for your PM and comments. I find that I am using this Fuji so much more than my full size D800. It is just a joy to hold and shoot with. The lenses are so sharp and silky smooth. Took some snow shots and the snow in the images is snowy white, no having to adjust settings to have the snow white and not gray! Waiting now for Fuji to release a teleconverter and a pro line dedicated flash. This less weight is great for me.

As someone who enjoys taking pictures as well as playing with cameras, I recently came across a mint condition Fuji X-Pro1 and decided to bid on it on eBay. I won the auction as well as an auction for a Fuji 18-55 2.8-4. I was intrigued by the Fuji's hybrid OVF and EVF which changes with just the pull of a lever. With all of Fuji's firmware updates, the X-Pro1 is a pleasure to shoot with. The menus are easy to navigate and the buttons are large enough with good tactile feel. And the images...just superb. I still use my Olympus EM-10 and Sony RX100II, but I must say, there is something special about the Fuji. Their customer service is terrific as well.

Why don't you just buy a Nikon or Canon mirrorless (assuming the mounts are compatible with your DSLR lens)?

Well, I am not planning on buying anything in the near future .. but it did cross my mind that the mirrorless might be a good option sometimes. I heard a complete review of the mirrorless systems by John Greengo at creative live. He was of the opinion that Sony has the best technology for these cameras right now. He explained everything in technical detail. He gave the pros and cons of DSLR's vs mirrorless. He owns both types and likes to use them for different types of photography. Then I saw this guy on youtube saying that he was switching from Nikon full frame to the Sony. Did you see the video? So I was confused as to who was right. I think John Greengo was the more honest of the two. He seemed to give a fair appraisal of all the cameras. But this pro was so adamant about the Sony being better than everything. It's hard to know what to believe because some photographers won't admit to any faults their camera might have.

Sandra, Yes, I saw the video. Everything he said was true but he did not mention any of the negatives of mirrorless or Sony for that matter. Another question that may be more important is what features does one want or need in their camera. For example, I love the 10 fps (on my A65) for sports and wildlife photography. I wouldn't settle for less no matter what. But if you don't need it then don't cross the cameras that don't have it off your list. I love the electronic viewfinder - it does so much more than the optical at the cost of some resolution but it has the option of a focus indicator (everything that is in sharp focus has the edges highlighted in red (or color of my choice) which is great for manual focusing and seeing the dof. I would never go back to optical but, big but, if you love the clarity of optical or the ability to see through the viewfinder you might want the camera with the absolute best viewfinder clarity. I think in comparing cameras, aside from personal preferences (as mentioned) check out the side by side test photos of the cameras in consideration. Ultimately that is the only thing you care about and probably has more to do with the lens you have than the camera brand.

Seriously, Sandra, if I were you I would get the camera that is most compatible with your lenses, assuming it has all the features you need. You don't want the best camera out there, you just want the one that best meets your particular needs.

Take a look at the Fuji cameras on Utube. There are an amazing amount of DSLR converts out there. Look at some of the works of Damien Lovegrove, Zack Arias, Aaron Nace and others. I personally did a lot of research before switching. You now have to pry this XT-1 from my hands. No more lugging heavy stuff around. Amazing beautiful lenses. Think I should be a Fuji salesman? 😃😃
Just some info. I know you're not switching but thought you would be interested.

I am always interested in photography equipment. :-) I love new gear. But no ... I don't mind lugging stuff around .. and if I ever did get one of these mirrorless cameras .. and I would like to .. it would be in addition to my dslr.

You know .. there is just no better feeling than getting up before dawn and heading out in the dark with a ton of gear knowing you could do anything if you wanted to.
