Anyone familiar with GIMP for post-processing? It's free and seems to have exactly the same tools as Photoshop. One example: content aware move.

I've never seen any mention of it here.

Gimp: "GNU Image Manipulation Program"

It's a very popular program, with quite a bit of online help, and the price is certainly right. No monthly fee. :D

I've been using GIMP extensively for years. I don't get that much into Graphic Arts as such, but work with photography daily.

I use Linux and hence much of the workflow and the toolset that are intrinsic to my work are different than what most others here on UHH are familiar with.

I just looked at Digital_Black_and_White_Conversion in this tutorial. It's very deep!

Does the operating system have to be Linux?

I went and took a look to see. It was obvious on the first page or two that it was strictly GIMP, and would be the same on any platform.

However, I couldn't stop looking! Right down to the last page, that tutorial has some extremely fascinating examples of wonderful photography! And they illustrate very good editing too...

I used GIMP for several years and found it useful. However, I started using Lightroom for basic postprocessing because I found it simpler to do the adjustments and it also kept a catalog so I could find things later.

Eventually I moved to PostScript since it had much more capability than GIMP. Also it's easy to move images from LR to PS and back. That was quite a while back, so GIMP has undoubtedly advanced since then, but I doubt it has as much functionality as PS. However, GIMP probably has everything that many people need and the price is definitely better.

I use Paint.Net. It's also free.

I also have Gimp its a good program too.

Paint.net seemed easier for me to learn.

Thanks for posting the link, Baz.

You can also download printable Pdf files of the same tutorials from here: http://www.gimp2tutorials.info/downloads.htm

They cover Tools and how to use them; How to give your photos that 'WOW' factor; Layers and how to put them to work.

I have PS CC on my windows computer desktop . On my main laptop , I have Linux Zorin 9 Ultimate with Gimp . I have tried using Gimp now and then , but always return to my PS CC rather quickly . I just know where to find all the tools are , and get tired of trying to find the same things in Gimp . It all comes down to what you are use to I guess for me .Tommy

I used GIMP on both Windows and Linux (Ubuntu) PCs.
It's powerful, complex and free. It always amazed me that such a thing could be free..
I found it difficult to learn.
Then I tried Lightroom and bought it, then Adobe launched the "Creative Cloud for Photographers" at $10/month and I subscribed.
I consider it a price that's almost as amazing as free.

Thanks, I just learned something new, the content aware move tool! I support very much open source stuff and would encourage trying it. I myself have not had much success with Gimp, since I have spent 15 years becoming familiar with Photoshop. I cannot figure out how to do the same thing with Gimp that is now second nature with Photoshop, since things are arranged differently. I do not believe I have heard of Gimp doing things that Photoshop can't, would be interested to hear about any. I would think it is ideal for those who have not already used Photoshop and want something different; if you only used Gimp from the beginning you could get just as fluent with it theoretically. Yet I have not come across it much in my web surfing where someone says "I made it with Gimp". I would think there are some geeks out there who have mastered both and could give an objective appraisal. I am thinking it should do well in third world countries.
