I would be interested in what camera make you think is best. consider features, construction, versitality and anything else you want. I shoot a nikon d 3100 now and I think it takes flat dull pics. I have upped the saturation and sharpness and that helped some....but I used to shoot a canon (i think it was a t3 EOS EF - S rebel?) anyway man what color. I look at the pics from the canon, untouched, and very deep color compared to the nikon pics. So, what do you guys think? ( I am aware there is a huge availability of cameras so for this post let's keep the cost of the camera, and thus the range, to $500.00 to $1,000.00) thnks!

I think you may need to get more information regarding the operation of your camera. I know people that use that camera and get excellent results. Each camera brand processes the images captured differently and Canon is know for some same over saturated photos. That being said I have shot Canon EOS since 1987 and have not shot Nikon on a regular basis since their feeble auto focus system they used in the beginning.

The sharpness of your photos has a lot more with your lens and shooting technique than your body. The D3100 will produce excellent results when used right. Have you ever thought of joining a local photo club or Meetup group?

Seriously...one is as good as the other. When you compare photos of two differnt cameras...make sure both cameras have the same settings and same lens, you wont see much if any differnce.

RJB,
This is a fine little entry level camera, I would think that you have not set it up correctly. Are you using the kit lens? If so this camera takes excellent photos, crisp and beautiful color saturation. First off what ISO are you using, then what is the light source, Shutter Speed, and Fstop? Then also what White Balance are you using? If you supply this info I am sure there are enough people here to help you.

George

I've seen quite a few beautiful pictures from them with the inexpensive 18-55mm, maybe the op has defective equipment.
