I have been taking some graphic pics since Sharp Shooter has run his composition threads. Let me know what you think. I don't do much b&w so any helpful hints on that would be appreciated.

F/8
1/400 second exposure
ISO 200
150mm

Interesting image however I see very little tonal range - almost looks as it came from a monochrome copy machine. Though that might be the effect you were looking for.

If your camera has it, you should try the "D-Light" feature.

D-LIght? I've never heard that term ... since I have no idea what a monochrome from a copy machine looks like, I'm afraid I don't know what you're talking about.

Me neither. I like the somber look of this piece the way it is. It brings up a lot of different feelings in me and I really identify with it - with or without the cropping.

Nightski:
Actually I should have said 'D-Lighting'. Here's an article explaining the feature.

http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Learn-And-Explore/Article/fsqd6p6h/active-d-lighting.html

On my Nikon D700, it's in the shooting menu;it's called 'Active-D-Lighting and it evens out the tones.

W/R to the word monochrome, I meant the image, without much tonal range, looked as if it was printed out from an ordinary copy machine. I used the term "monochrome" to indicate that the copy was black/white as opposed to color.

You sound a bit miffed. I truly hope not. I'm simply critiquing it as that's the point of this section of the forum. As I mentioned earlier, perhaps you were after that stark b/w look.

Not at all, Arthur ... I did research D-lighting and as I understand it this setting on the Nikon refers to photos taken as jpegs .. not to photos taken in the RAW setting.

Do you mean that my image doesn't have enough in between grays? To be honest with you, I am very new at photography and post processing. I am horrible at b&w ... and it never occurred to me that I need to get all the tones in between. I know what I like when I see other peoples great b&w pics, but I don't know how to do it for myself yet. This has given me food for thought, and please add any specifics on your thoughts that you may have.

I am never offended, I just didn't really understand what you were saying. Thank you for looking and commenting.

Oh wow! This is great! I must be living in some sort of photographic limbo. I don't like the D-Lighting photo. Prefer the one on the right. Oh well, what the heck.

Thank you, Jim. I really appreciate all your encouragement. I am going back up there tomorrow and am going to play with it a bit more.
