But, how do they get your own phone number, to show up on the caller ID?

There are smart phone apps that allow you to choose the number you want to show on the caller ID.

I was as surprised when I got a call from my own phone number, too. When I answered, it was a telemarketer trying to sell me a vacuum cleaner. I asked her why it was my own phone number on the caller ID, she said she had no idea and hung up!

When I checked online, I found https://www.callercenter.com/blg/articles/spoofing-caller-ids/ where I learned that callers can actually fake the phone number that appears on the recipient's caller ID. It's called caller ID spoofing. Surprisingly, it's some telephone companies that provide the tool to facilitate spoofing.

My home phone rang yesterday. I looked at the Caller ID and it had my name and home phone number listed as the caller? How can that be? It was a telemarketer.

It is called "spoofing"...It is the same way you get SPAM emails that appear to come from your own email address...

Yea that has been around for a long time but I thought of it when I read this thread. For anyone who has never heard it before it is hilarious.

I did that, I couldn't believe they called back so I did it again. then I got a call back from the owner of the company threatening me and that he was coming down to my home, I told him come on down, when I open the door you will be staring down the barrel of a 12 GA.

never ever heard from them again

i get a lot of calls like that, where do i find a reverse lookup??
jimmya wrote:
You are correct, the "do not call" list isn't doing much... well I really can't say that because I get only a couple of calls a week on my cell. Who knows how many companies honor the list and don't call me.

I did a reverse lookup on a number yesterday, it's on the west coast and the company is flagged as a telemarketer.
