Photo Restoration help (please)
Hi,
A friend of mine asked if I could restore this very old photograph (found in an old locket) of her Granddad but I feel it's way out of my league as I only have Adobe Photoshop elements 12 and that its probably to far gone to help rebuild it?. I scanned it at 300dpi and if any one can help me to revive it (and let me into the secret of how) that would be great.
I'm on a long learning curve with photo restoration (only been doing it for a short while) but find the end projects very rewarding.
Hope someone can help or advise out there in hoggerland?
Best wishes,
Graham

Thanks Searcher,
I've done that now, thank you. I've been a hogger for a short while but I've not used the site fully due to my work commitments (which have now ended because I've retired; at last) and my hectic private life but I knew someone on here would help or be able to advise me.
Thanks again.
Cheers,
Graham.
you need to put a check in the box next to store original and post the photo in a high file size . Preferable in a file size of at least 1mb to give any of us a fair chance to restore it ,Tommy
Thanks Tommy,
I've rescanned it at a higher res and attached it here.
Cheers,
Graham

Graham, It is do-able for a large part, even in PSE12.
However, there are some parts that will prove impossible with any program because the information just isn't there: examples are the gentleman's profile and the part of the building hidden by the light blotch on the left.
In that blotch all information is missing, in the gentleman's face you cannot tell what is the nose, mouth or building behind it.
If I had the time, I would see it as a challenge....
This image will take an enormous amount of time to "fix" and if I had the time I would be the first one to offer....
Hi Tommy,
I agree 100% with your comments. Here's what I've managed to do so far, I used "artistic licence" (who am I kidding) to rebuild what I could.
But like you said it's gonna take a long time sorting this out with so many features missing.
Thanks again Tommy.
Regards,
Graham.
I gave it a try. Not a huge improvement, especially the nose area.
Hi Wendy,
Don't under estimate you're work, you've done a great job, I'm impressed.
I hope you don't mind me asking but what program did you use and how did you achieve the results please?
I'm only playing at this at the moment and I'm keen to get a grip of it as I have loads of old photos I want to work on during my retirement.
Thanks again for a great job.
Best wishes,
Graham.
I wont be able to work on it until tuesday or wed. Will need a few hrs after I star on it for sure , Tommy

Glad I could help!
I use Photoshop CS6, however I believe you can get the same results with the program you have.
I used the healing brush and the clone tool, very gently. I believe you have access to the same tools.
Hi Wendy,
I presume you refer to the opacity when you refer to "gentle use"? I'll give it a go and thanks again.
Best wishes,
Graham.

Graham, take a look at this site:
http://www.retouchpro.com/There is more on how to restore images than in just about any location I can think of.
Thank you Gene.

I used PS CC and a Wacom tablet and pen . I set a small brush size and used the different Healing Brushes to trace over all the cracks . Some burn and dodge tool , and some paint tool . And some guess work on the face using all my experience from restoring photos .I didn't want to do any more to keep the the realness of how old this photo is with the quality we all had to work with . If you would like to know how much time spent , 3.5 hrs .Maybe your friend will like it , and maybe not .Tommy
