I second the notion of very low key and nothing that saws "valuables inside." I personally use a lumbar pack and keep it in front of me. My boss had someone try to unzip his backpack that was on his back.....all in the subway in front of other preople.

I've also used a lumbar pac, works well, lunch and a lens, if you go with a messenger style bag, flap goes toward you, lot harder for someone else to grab your stuff and easier for you, old, cheap, is the way to go, as far as the look, nothing that says CAMERA or COMPUTER, think wally world type of gear, just add a little padding, Bob.

Actually we are getting safer here, lots of less interesting cities that are more dangerous, just be careful and watch where you go, BTW, don't buy from street vendors on Canal Street, and other obvious cautions, Bob.

I'm looking for a bag to carry a Canon 70D, a Sigma 18-200mm lens and a Canon 10-18mm Lens. I have been looking hard at the Lowepro Urban Reporter 250 Camera Messenger Bag.

My question is: Has anyone had any experience with that bag and does anyone have any other suggestions. My goal is to find a bag that does not draw a lot of attention.

Thanks, in advance for all your help.

BTW there is probably a parade in Chinatown next weekend,

Anything can be stolen. Take reasonable precautions and go about your business. Otherwise, stay home or leave your gear at home. I've been in and out of Manhattan, and most other major US cities since the sixties and have never had an incident worth mentioning. I keep my eyes open and pay attention to what is going on around me. To me, that's far more important then what bag I have. Unfortunately, many people don't pay attention. That's what thieves look for.

A shoulder bag is relatively easy pickings for a snatch and grab thief. If it works for you, I suggest a slingbag. Smaller, but handier then a backpack. It can't be grabbed off your shoulder when worn properly and you can get your camera out without having to take it off or set it on the ground. I have a Lowpro Slingshot 202 which I find to be perfect for a camera and an extra lens or 2.

I second your motion.

I am going to wait a couple of weeks until it get a little warmer. Even though I'm originally from Boston, there is a limit to the cold I can take now that I am older than dirt, lol.

I used a Tenba messenger bag throughout a recent trip to Italy. It was comfortable to use and I encountered no problems, including would-be camera thieves.

I was in Manhattan in November with my daughter: I'd think we were quite obviously tourists, and I had a 5D11 on an Op/Tech strap (X across the back and over the shoulders) and a Messenger-type camera bag at my side (with the strap across my chest not just on one shoulder). We walked all over for two days, went on the subway and on buses, early to late night (including Times Square after dark) and had not the slightest problem. In fact, we found New Yorkers exceptionally friendly and helpful, often offering advice before we even asked. I know you can be unlucky, but we never ever felt threatened or in danger. I can highly recommend the Hi Line Walk and the Chelsea Market at the end of it. Have fun and a good time.

Not that much warmer down where you are, I remember sea and Anchor details in the Chesapeake, colder than a witches left...

I cut the name tag off my bags. It my be a back pack in some one's mind and not a camera bag. I'm not hyper but I don't look for problems when carrying thousands of dollars of stuff.

It is safe for the most part I have a son there who is a parole officer he used to be a prison guard buy wanted to help folks not just lock them away, and he goes into the worst of it. As long as you do not have your camera out you wont be advertising much if you use the likes of think tank, or roll your own backpack from lesser known manufacturers, problem is we are photographers ans show a camera and unfortunately related gear, in NYC a street camera such as fuji, leica, olympus etc. help you hid the fact it is pricey and worth a thief's effort.

I would recommend cut-proof straps for the camera bag as well as for the camera itself. They are practically impossible to cut using standard wire cutters. I would also recommend traveling light: a couple of batteries, a couple of SD cards, and wide-zoom and long-zoom lenses (one in the bag and one on the camera). Leave everything else in your room safe. Avoid straps that advertise your brand of camera ... plain black is good enough. In difficult or crowded situations, carry your bag and camera across the chest if at all possible.

Having said all of that, NYC is reputed to be safer than it used to be (whatever that means).

Have a nice trip. It's a great city, full of great sights and great people, and it is the city of my birth.
