can I share one with you with the logs and with a bit more contrast? Not better but different.
Why not. I offered honest and constructive critique trying to help you improve on your photography. You seem to have an interest in learning and if I can help you it will be a pleasure to do it.
We are all different and it is obvious we all have different tastes and I told you some people will prefer the logs in the foreground while others like me do not because I do not believe it adds anything to the beautiful shot.
In my humble opinion the pictures is a great candidate for b&w photography.
Excellent shot, Bud! I really like it!

This is what the hog is about - sharing. I'm in a camera club where the critiques are from those that do the big shows. Wow, what a learning experience to listen to the constructive ideas to improve including my own.
That said, even with three very experienced judges, they don't always agree and of course state their cases. As you have said, and I completely agree, there can be a variety of good.
Nice conversation!
To the original post, I am having issues with my computer and maybe it is trying to tell me that it is time for retirement.
I do not believe I will be able to answer emails or even look at this site like I usually do. I want also others to notice.
Pithydoug if you show your pictures to others, supposedly with more photographic expertise and they point out to you those things that can be improved in an honest and constructive way I bet sooner than later your basic photographic knowledge will grow fast. You do not get any education when you show a picture and your ego interferes with the critique.
You are absolutely right, judges differ in their opinions because we all are different but when it comes to select a first prize everybody agrees.
I wish when I got started that a forum or someone would have critiqued my work because by now I would have been a better photographer.
I want to thank you for your comments.

It's never too late to start. :) I was 66 before I got more serious.
As for your computer or maybe your monitor, it's time to make the move. I moved up about 6 months ago and what a difference with a calibrated monitor.
I love your original post of this. You can imagine the roar and the spray of the wave as it hits the rocks, feel the rush of the wave as it rolls over. The muted color adds to the chill and desolation of the lone lighthouse. Its a powerful image and may be even better without the logs at the base.

Such powerful water. You must have some secret power, Bud. When I go to the beach I can never conjure up beautiful waves like this one. Thanks for this. John O.
