Doug, what Howard and I did, was not the cropping, but filling in the yellow area in the top right corner, with the "rocks" from the background.
If you cannot follow what I wrote up, let me know, and I'll try and go into more detail, even include some screenshots.

Sorry, obviously i missed that. Ok, I did it in two steps cropped and a simple clone. Not trying to be difficult but rather a big fan of keeping these alterations as simple as possible.

How's this look? I just used the polygonal lasso> selected a small area from the left of the triangle> layer > new > layer via copy> move ,and then moved it into place. Voila.

Howard, you nail it. You took a great shot and made it better. David

Very well done! And yes, I like it a lot better than with the yellow triangle in the corner!

Haven't mentioned it before, but that little guy could well be one of my grandkids, he's so adorable!!!! (You know of course, that my grandkids are the best-looking, smartest, most huggable, etc. kids around? So are yours, of course ;-) )

Cloning will work (in this case) and what MS and I were trying to show you is a far better solution. You had two people who were sharing some gems of information and you chose to clone rocks. Sorry, I couldn't resist that. Give our suggestion a shot, you'll really like it - it's a really neat (in every sense of the word) way to make things disappear. I might even demonstrate that. I'm sure I speak for both of us when I say, we've got your back - go for it!

Here's the DEMO. It is purely to show possibilities. I did it in about 20 minutes and it is not nearly well done as I normally work BUT it demonstrates what I wrote earlier. Try cloning to get the same effect. Again, this is purely a QUICK demo of the method MS and I were trying to show you.

Done in a few more minutes - while waiting for dessert. The fuzziness on the lower part of the girder was because I didn't have a hard edge setting in brushes - those settings affect the selection edges. OH well.

This may just be me, but I find the pale triangle in the upper right to be distracting. Cropping farther to the right would "fix" that "problem" also.

I'm not disagreeing with what you are suggesting, and one may say it is very elaborate. OTOH, in this simple case too much work for too change.

It's like I can walk across the street to get to my neighbors house or go in the opposite direction, and around the world, and get there. I like cloning rocks. :) :)

And as a side issue and maybe somewhat important, Cloning is within LR while those that don't, have nor want to play in PS, can also do this easily. I also bet most the free PPing tools, can also do this.

We skinned the cat and it is dead! :) :)

If the original image has more space on the right I would include that. It would be good to have more space in the direction that he is looking. I think your vantage point is too high. It would have been good to squat or kneel down to get the camera closer to his height.

I concur.

The triangle in the upper right is distracting. I wonder if content aware fill in Photoshop could eliminate that and fill it in with the texture of the stones. I just got PSE 13 and I know they added that but I haven't tried it yet.

Yes, that is a thought. Or crop the top out. Not sure why he has a square image to begin with.

I'm not sure about the cropping. I would like to know if you could have gotten down lower to eliminate the background rocks right off the bat. Many people don't pay enough attention to backgrounds. As for the various rules ... no them and then break them when you feel it right to do so.

Yes, the backgrounds. I guess being more experienced I tend to walk away from a lot of shots where I can not avoid a distracting background. Because I know I will not really like the image in the end with a flower coming out of someone's nose, or the like. Or just distracting textures or hot spots.

It's the Florida climate. Get back to NY and enjoy the wonderful snow and real seasons. :)
