Going to the Boat - First Time

Here is a good birds eye view of what pilots see when they are landing on the deck of a carrier.

Most Marine pilots are required to do carrier quals, as all Navy pilots are required to do.

They begin with touch and go(arresting gear hook up), then proceed to catch an arresting gear wire on the ships surface.

Take note of the pilots description of the moving angle deck they have to land on....

I remember years back playing with one of those computer simulation airfare games and doing carrier landings in different weather conditions. Under the best conditions I either hit the back of the carrier or overshot the deck with power reduced too low to keep from going in the ocean. My palms were sweating just playing a damn game.

As an old submarine sailor, I 'm surprized to hear a carrier being called a boat.
Which led me to do a little research.

Spending many years on a (couple) carrier.. I can tell you that the landing is sort of a controlled crash landing.. awesome to witness !!

I had the pleasure of spending the day out at sea on the old Forrestal carrier. Watching the take offs and landings was a thing to behold. Not to mention noisy. :-D

In my book anything on the surface is a boat. Anything on the bottom is a wreck. What's in between is a sub.
