The way I do it with people is i find a shot I really like and then Make 2 virtual copies in lightroom> I then adjust my exposure +2 and -2 on each and combine all 3 in photomatix. Does not work all of the time but its pretty cool.

Photoguy... Yeah, tried that and it DOES work sometimes. I use RAW files as they have more color information. I usually get just as good results with NIKs Tone Mapping HDR module.
