I use a Puffin Pad as my bean bag light weight 3 oz, doesn't need to be filled, easy to pack, fitts over car windows - fenceposts - knees - etc. Yes it cost $ but I can take it eveywhere

12 x 12 is too big. a 6 x 6 is just about right. The 12 in bag would not sit on a fence post or similar very well. I have even used 2 lawn chairs back to back with the bag on the top, you will be amazed how steady a bean bag can be. The camera just snuggles into the bag.

Go to a drug store like walgreens and get one of the neck pillows. The ones filled with the small bead like what evers,
they all so sell them on airplanes now.
They work great for hanging over a fence, tree limb,or just taking a nap while the wife watches for a good shot for you.

I use one on trips, especially to Africa when taking pictures from a vehicle. What I use is my bean bag that doubles as my computer mouse bean bag. You may even have one already.

I have a couple, made them both. one buckwheat one rice.
A couple years ago I made another one with medical grade gel pad. cushions camera and or camera lens nice and soft. I was skeptical that the camera would roll but it didn't.

I used one of my old army green socks filled with rice tied a knot on the end. If the going got tuff I could boil the rice.

I like your survivalist point of view. I prefer most things to have multiple uses. A monopod makes a good club. I often walk with a cane, another weapon. My go bag has an iPod touch, it has sharp edges, but also is a computer, light meter, camera, tape recorder, WIFI cell phone and finally is good for barter.

My wife made me one that was 6x6. Filled it with chicken grit because she was concerned about decomposition of anything organic. It works fine for me. Thanks dear.

I forget the photographer, but on a podcast I listened to last year, he would buy beans locally when he was traveling in Africa and put a zip lock bag full of them in a cloth bean bag that was zippered. When his trip was over, he donated the beans to one of the locals. A lot of his shooting was in very isolated areas and the beans were much appreciated.
