I shoot a lot of shots using neutral density plastic square filters. I am looking for a plastic neutral density to fit the front of my Nikon 14-24mm zoom. My smaller filters do not cover at 14mm. I would need a least a 4 inch by 4 inch plastic #8 neutral density filter. My smaller ones are not expensive, they can scratch easily but they are cheap and I can replace them. Anyone know of a source for cheap 4X4 or 6X6 filters. And yes, cheap plastic filters are just as good as glass ones, they work really great, especially on water movement.

I realize the following suggestion is not made of plastic, but have you ever checked into welding glass. they make panels for the welding masks in various shades and were usually only $10.00 to $20.00 when I used to buy them. you may be able to find them on ebay, most definitely on the internet, or at a local tool store that sells welding equipment.

They are not camera optical quality and have massive ugly colour casts, but people have used them.

Why don't you follow some of your own advice, and look for yourself.

Most of these will NOT work with that Nikon Lens. Make very sure you tell anyone you purchase from what lens you are fitting this for. The Nikon 14-24 f2.8 takes a very custom holder. As far as I know only Lee makes one to fit it. Lee calls it their 150 holder.

The OP only asked about 4" square filters, so of course they WILL work. I don’t generally answer questions that weren’t asked.
