How many here have pre-ordered the new to be released Sigma 150-600mm Sport model Lens and what are you hanging it on?
I also wonder if it will be the frenzy of the Tamron when it was released? Any opinions?

If Hunt's (local for me) was taking pre-orders, I would. I really want to try it before I buy, even for 10 minutes, so going to the local store would allow that. I am very spoiled by primes, so the image quality would have to be very good for me to buy it.

I do not think it will have quite the frenzy as the Tamron:
* the Tamron is already satisfying many photographers
* Sigma is also releasing a 150-600mm Contemporary to compete directly with the Tamron
* the Sport is twice as expensive as the others

Having used Sigma's only Sports lens, the 120-300mm F2.8 for almost 1 1/2 years now, AND their 150-500mm for close to 4 years, the new Sports 150-600mm was a no-brainer, especially since Sigma chose to release it ahead of the Contemporary version. I have 6 coming next week, one for me, one each in Nikon and Canon mounts for rentals, and 3 for customers who placed deposits for them already. After the Tamron "non-release" of their 150-600 I quickly became not the least bit interested in that offering.
I will be getting the Contemporary models in as well when they are released later this winter as the 150-500mm version has been my fastest selling lens from the day I opened my camera store. I have not re-stocked them as I have been awaiting the 150-600's for 3 months now.

I completely agree with you about the Tamron non-release. What a fiasco. Also my sentiments on the Sigma 150-500 hoping the new "Bigma" lives up to it's predecessor's reputation, plus. I think I will get the USB dock too, in time. Gotta love gadgets!

The dock is a wonderful tool and I think all manufacturers need to make this available for their lenses. You have to keep in mind though, that changes made to the lens will carry over to any body the lens is mounted on, as opposed to AF Fine Tuning done for a lens with the camera body, which does not affect the lens itself at all. A very different distinction.

Don, I'm excited about this (the Sport) for my D610 but I will wait until it is out for awhile to see how others like it before deciding on wheather to get it or not. ;)

It's a variable-aperture lens, and if the focus also changes with the focal length, which the specifications I read do not mention, it's too funky for me to consider.

MT--What's the real difference between the Sport and Contemporary?

Primarily build quality and weather sealing, but the focal length is about the only thing the two Sigma 150-600's have in common, they are totally different lenses in size, make-up and configuration.

I pre-ordered mine from B&H last month. I'll be using it on a D3.

MT, thanks for the info. The weight for the sport model seems to be readily available but I am having trouble finding the weight for the contemporary model. Do you have any info on that?

That has not been released yet. But I suspect it will come in VERY close to the current 150-500mm OS model that it is replacing.

I was hoping that the Sigma would be a little closer in price to that of the Tamron. Still debating on which way to go.

The Sigma "Sports" and "Contemporary" models are two VERY different lenses. The contemporary will be about the same price as the Tamron.
