For all.......how many different lenses do you really need? How many can you really afford? 2? 10? 25?

Is this really a "need", or is it a boys-with-toys situation?

In my case, it is needing, or maybe just wanting, particular capability ... and the most common lenses don't tend to be those lenses.

For example, I have visited the Henry Ford museum in Dearborn MI a number of times, but I could never figure out how to take a picture of their locomotive that was retired to the museum after bringing visitors, including President Hoover, to the opening of the museum; it was just too crowded. I tried one of those lenses that attaches to the front of a "normal" lens and doubles the field of vision (makes it more wide-angle), but I didn't like vignetting that it created. I eventually bought a Sigma 10-20mm lens for my Canon Rebel, and got the picture I wanted. But how many different mounts is a lens like that available for?

At the other extreme, my wife is a bird-watcher, and so we sometimes wander through the woods looking at birds and butterflies. I started off with a Tamron 18-270mm lens, but that wasn't enough. Again, I tried a lens that attaches to the front of that lens and doubles the reach (makes it more telephoto), but I didn't like how that affected the balance of the camera system. I eventually bought a Kenko doubler that goes between the lens and the camera, and that gave me closer to what I wanted. But how many different mounts are a lens like that and a doubler available for?

Isn't the Nikon/Canon battery life like twice that of the sony?

Don't know where you got that information from? I own a Sony DSLR and a Canon DSLR. The Sony batteries easily outlast the Canon batteries. Don't know why. Maybe due to IS being in the lens on a Canon and in the camera on a Sony.

I think it comes from the premise that the EVF of the Sony A7/A7R/A7S uses quite a bit of energy where as the OVF of the Canon/Nikon uses none. The battery in my D610 lasts a long time - around 1000 shots, but then I'm not using live view very much. Seems that the smaller Sony battery coupled with the power hungry EVF might not last as long. Your Sony is a DSLR so the comparison is not valid, the SLR battery might well outlast the Canon as it is not burdened with an EVF.

Well, a 'limited lens selection' seems a very good reason NOT to choose the Sony, and 'outstanding Nikon lenses' seems a very good reason TO choose Nikon.

IMHO, of course

The A7s has the ability to take low noise images at 52,600 ISO. Nothing Nikon has as a camera body can approach that kind of low light capability, including the D4s. Sony A7s mounts have few lenses that are of high quality at this time, but because the Sony A7s mount flange to sensor distance is short, an adapter should be able to fitted to the A7s, allowing a gorgeously sharp FE Nikon lens to be fitted to A Sony A7s, allowing low light image taking no Nikon body can supply at this moment.

IF you can afford to buy a Sony A7S, Canon 7DmkII, or Nikon D800/800E/810, then you can afford to buy a spare battery.

That is EXACTLY what the engineers and marketers at Sony were thinking when they designed the A7 series of cameras; high image quality full-frame sensors in small bodies that can utilize ANY glass on the market regardless of make or mount.

Pure Genius.
