I have a question. I would like to buy a new lens but they are so expensive. I was looking on a Web site not long ago. On that site they were saying that you could buy an attachment lens that that you can use on your lens that you already have. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. Has anyone used a lens that way?

What are you trying to do. They make TC's that on the back of the lens to give you more reach. They also sell dopilers to that go on the front to get you closer. Some of these are good some are bad.

I saw on photojojo an ad for those type of lens they were alot cheaper than buying a lens! It was the first time I saw anything like that! I love close-up shots! I'm really just kind of exploring!

I got this thing called a Fotodiox Canon EOS Macro Extension Tube Set Kit for Extreme Close-up, (it came with my Amazon order so what the heck, right?) you can get them for less than 15 bucks. Anyway I had no idea what it was but I looked on the web site and you attach these different rings, there's a 7mm, 14mm, and 28mm then you attach your lens and Wa-La you have a macro lens.
It seems to work OK I haven't played with it much but I would suggest you mount on a tripod or monopod because camera shake and micro seem to go hand and hand.

buy used lenses at KEH.com cost less have a 6 month warranty, very good company to deal with. you get more lens for less money.

Boy those are some long lenses. Extension tubes will work but it is going to be a hand full. Hard to hold and balance. A tripod will work though. Your best bet is to save up for a good micro lens like a 60mm or a 105. You can find some pretty good ones on ebay and at some of the better camera stores. Or if you could part with one of your lenses to get one.

why not rent the lens you want then look for a good used one. Lens Giant is a great company to work with

I purchased magnification lens at my local camera store. It's been a while so I don't recall the prices but they were very inexpensive. They come in different magnifications and screw onto the end of your lens like a UV filter does. You can even stack more than one on at a time. They are sometimes known as diopters. Amazon has a set of 4 for about $15. Of course quality is a factor so I would check the reviews and shop around. They are described as +1, +2, +4, etc. I got some really great close ups with them. Do need tripod though.

Extension tubes are OK - - but - unless you get one specifically designed for your lens (more expensive - often $100s), you may lose auto-focus and auto-exposure. You will also lose some light capture - chopping off the bottom 1 or 2 f/ stops.

Screw-on diopters to the front of the lens don't have the AF & AE limitations as above - but you may find yourself collecting internal reflections and losing some f/ stop as well. A good multi-coated diopter addition may also be somewhat expensive.

EITHER may provide the desired value IF you are aware of the tradeoffs you will encounter. Do your homework. IF you like the best IQ you can afford, then wait until you can save up to buy the right lens. Consider used at KEF.

a used nikon nifty fifty (50mm f1.8) will run you under 100 and gives you sharpness of a prime as well as low light abilty.
