I just learned that Amazon is charging sales tax on purchases made and delivered in Maryland and 25 other states.

Here are the details:

Yep you can thank your state representatives for that.

CA passed a similar law a while back. The law peanilizes large companies that have locations in the state by charging sales tax for any of their business in the state. Also on software sales. Yet another way to drive jobs away to other states.

I've been paying tax at Amazon so nothing will change for me. Thanks for posting this though, I would have loved to have discovered something I *wouldn't* have to pay tax on. ;)

States want money. NY shoppers have been paying sales tax to Amazon for years.

I can't understand how a state thinks it has the right to tax a sale made in another state. I bought a car in NH and had to pay sales tax when I registered it in NY.

Evidently living in MD was fortunate for me until now, lol!

In Texas, if it is shipped and sold by Amazon it is taxed. If it is fulfilled and shipped by Amazon it is not taxed. At least that has been my experience.

I think it's the same in NY.

You paid a USAGE tax when you registered the car (which "for convenience" is the same rate as the sales tax)

In NY, they actually call it sales tax when you register a car or buy a car from a dealer.

It used to be that when you bought a used car from an individual, you had to state how much paid and pay tax on that. Now they go by what they think the car is worth, regardless what you paid. You can still donate a car to a family member and not pay tax.

Amazon is no longer the bargain it once was. Our shopping on that site has dropped by 60% since the state of Florida started collecting tax earlier this year. In fact, I recently bought a new Canon 70d with the two lens kit (18-55 SM & 55-250) for 1195. In years past Amazon offered the best price and no tax now...not so much.

Amazon is always my first stop, but never my last. I recently saved $20 by getting something at Sam's Club.

Who are the "they" who call it a sales tax? NYS calls it a "use tax":

Okay. You're referring to out-of state purchases. For that, they use the term "use tax." I thought you were referring to sales within the state. At least that tax is deductible.

1978 +-, I bought a new Kawasaki one county over. About six months later, I had a gal from the GA Dept of Revenue, and a deputy sheriff knocking on my door, wanting the tag off the motorcycle, because I owed my county $22.00 for the one percent extra sales tax.
