I saw only 2 Eastern Black Swallowtails, 2 Monarchs, 1 Tiger Swallowtail, and a few Skippers this summer. There were flowers all around the neighborhood and everyone was in a butterfly drought. I previously posted a
Black Swallowtail I photographed late in the summer.
I shot a class reunion the day before this Monarch appeared in our yard feeding on our
Pink Zinnias, so a long lens wasn't on my camera. I loaded a CF card while I rushed out to get some shots before it flew away.
The week before, a local
Butterfly House released their
Monarch Butterflies and I was hoping to see some. This was the only one that came by and these shots are some of which I was able to get. It didn't stay very long, and it didn't spread its wings until it very quickly flew away.
I used my Canon EOS 50D w/EFS17-85mm IS USM lens; Av @ f11; ISO 200. PP w/PsE8. Exif intact.

Nice female Monarch. I hope she is winging her way south.
Super-pleasing series, Gene. So beautiful!
Don't think I've seen a Monarch in a couple of decades.

:-) Thank you, Doug. I was hoping she laid some eggs before she flew away but she only fed while I shot these. Thanks for looking.

:) Thank you, Linda. Glad you like them. I have been seeing less and less through the years but this year has been the worst. Thanks for looking.
