My wife opened a new area in the yard for flowers and put in one of those seed mats to see if it was suitable. This is what came up.
Single Flowered zinnias have a single row of petals that reveals the center of the flower, rather than hiding it like the semidouble and double flowered types do. More info ...

:) Thank you, Erv. We were surprised what grew. I wasn't sure if anything would grow on the spot. The package indicated what seeds were in the mat but this single plant came out. There are more buds ready to bloom.
I know Janny will enjoy watching them grow -- you, too. I await next spring/summer's pics.
