@Roger and Jerry: I've been involved with other clubs (not photography-related) and find that's exactly what happens ... so going into this cautiously open-minded. We'll see eh?

and dont forget the picnic basket :P
Curious, why the @ before the names?
I've had enough of running clubs. There is a free Photoshop workshop next week, so I'll try to get to that.
Directing the comment back at that person- is what the @ means.

Absolutely! And give 'em the benefit of the doubt for a few weeks. But if it doesn't work out and you walk... Well, they'll still be happy, and so will you.
Cheers,

I joined one at the end of January. I am going to give it a try to see what happens. I started looking last September and needed to see what my schedule would be in 2012 to narrow the search. I might look into the meetup situation and see what is going on with that.

one of the things I really like about my camera club is we don't do club competitions, we get together show our latest work, discuss it (much like C&C here), visit for an hour and discuss the next field trip, what so and so is working on etc.
Pretty much it's a bunch of friends getting together and discussing our passion.

@MWAC: I wish Somewhere East of Crazy was on the map, I'd like that kind of group!
Your input about camera clubs is interesting. I also belong to a local club, about 15 miles away from my home. When I first joined, about 8-10 years ago, I found a lot of older, self-interested people who competition seemed to be far too important to. After the first year, I almost quit going, but gradually over the years, this club is changing focus from competition to education. Some of these changes aren't coming easy, and a couple of times the club almost broken apart, but gradually, with new and younger members, and newer and younger board members, we're becoming a club that has exciting speakers and is focusing more on education, although we still have competitions, which I would love to see go by the, as I think we should only compete with ourselves for improvement.
@MWAC, I like the sounds of your club.
This forum is the only "club" I belong to. We meet everyday, at all hours. The best part is we get to meet a lot of great people from around the globe.

That's me. Really enjoy it as can read whenever I get up and at my own pace. I can't get away as my hubby has Alzheimer and getting away is impossible. This is my club. Thanks for all the information and lively conversations. I really enjoy it as my down time. Keep it up.
Yes, I am very active in a local club sponsered by the county Art Center in Citrus County Florida. I am on the club board and responsible for technology including building and maintaining the club website. We have been in the process of migrating to all digital competitions and will hopefully have that feat complete for next season. We have a general/competition meeting monthly with workshops and field trips at other times during the month. Our membership is made up of mostly seniors who are not very technical and need a lot of TLC. We also have some very accomplished photographers as well. Clubs are a great way of learning and sharing your photography interest.

I belong to Camera Club of Brevard for the last 5 years in Melbourne, Florida and found it very beneficial. Our club has monthly meetings with speakers/programs and photo contests, Field-Trips, and periodic workshops. Our members range from P&S users to professional photographers. Our club has grown from 30 members to over 250 during the last 5 years. As a result of being a member for the last 5 years my photographs have greatly improved. Arnold
I belong to two clubs who meet monthly ( luckily, at different times ). One is only a year old and the members range from novices to pros. The focus is to round up speakers and organize field trips. It turns out very productive and friendly. the other is more designed for advanced amateurs and pros and I learn a ton of valuable info every time I attend.
