I bought a new Dell XPS 8700 I7 processor, 24 gig memory, ssd front end, 2 gig HD, 2 gig graphics through Costco. It ran fine until last Friday when it totally crashed. The computer attempted to fix itself for over an hour then reported it could not fix it. Blue Screen came up with some options. I called Costco because I had talked to them before I bought it and they assured me that I could come to them for support and not have to go to Dell. They had me get into diagnostics which took 5 hours to run. The diagnostics report was that no component was found bad so it must be a software problem. Today with a Costco support person we went to a Dell person and was disconnected 3 times before getting a connection that we could hardly hear. It became obvious to me and the Costco guy that the Dell guy did not know what he was doing and the Costco guy stopped the call after about an hour. He then said all he knew to do was reformat and reinstall the original W8.0 that come with it. I told him this was not satisfactory and I would call again on Tuesday and see if someone else would help.

Does anyone out there have a suggestion for me on what you would do next???

I agree about trying safe mode first. If that does not work and you keep getting the blue screen of death, you probably have a nasty virus. BTW, what anti virus software do you have? You should check it to see if it has unrecoverable errors listed on it. If it has an option to do a rootkit virus scan, do that. If it has a rootkit virus that cannot be fixed, you should let the Costco guy back up your personal files, wipe out the c drive and do another install. At that point you will have no choice other than buying a new machine. Rootkit viruses are vicious. The first thing they do is rewrite your startup instructions to include launching the virus first. That means that no matter how many times you get rid of it, it will constantly re-launch itself forever. I assume that you have updated your virus definitions and done a full computer scan already. If not start with that and check the results. The BEST virus scan I ever used is produced by Sophos.com . They are industry leaders. They do not sell home virus software, only business. However they will let you download a home version for free on a trial basis. If you have a virus, Sophos will find it. I use AVG free virus software. It works very well. Of course, if you wipe the drive and reinstall windows, you will need to reinstall any other software that was on the machine, as well as restoring any personal files (documents, photos, music, etc.). Good luck with this.

The first thing I always do with a new machine or a machine that's having problems, is take off the cover and re-seat all the boards and memory. Things can work loose during shipping.
It just may solve your problems.

Do you know what the blue screen error codes were?

With the SSD, I can not get it to go in the safe mode. I've tried a number of way I saw on the net to do it, but none work. If you know how, let me know.
I keep my anti-virus up-to-date and use malwarebytes weekly. I've not had a virus in 15+ years.
What I think might have caused this was a 54kb windows update that was installed the day before it crashed?
When I get the blue screen, it relates only to the SSD I think and can not find the files to do some of the advanced troubleshooting that is probably on the C drive.

Thanks to all that tried to help. I'm still stuck and can not get past the ssd to do good repair to this computer. Seems that Windows 8.1 will not go into the safe mode when it will not boot. The experts say the ssd is too fast to allow it to happen. You also can not get msconfig to come up either. One expert says I will have to do a total restore of W8 and I will loose all my files. I am backed up to an external hard drive, but to rebuild what I had will take lots of time.

That's the best course of action. Scratch the box and re-install everything.

If you have access to another computer with Win 8 make a repair disk on a flash drive that has full 8 GB capacity. Called 'create a recovery drive' in win 8.
This recovery partition should offer three repair options.

regedit will allow you to load files off the installation disk. then you will have to go back and update all restored files.

After three dell computers I have finally realized that the best way to fix any problem that may pop up ia to buy a MacbookPro. This will be my next purchase.
Computers can be frustrating and I do hope you find out what caused your problem and can start using your computer. The most frustrating part of any call to help you is to get a guy from India who speaks very poor English.
