I would suggest that if you cannot sort out your thoughts on LR & PS then you are not ready for the bigger "on the border" question.

I'm on the border, trying to decide if I want to pursue photography professionally. It's always been a personal passion. I've worked in photoshop a tad before and recently had a free trial of lightroom, however I'm still not versed enough to know the biggest difference and what works best for what photography. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you.

Get both. $10/month. They are complementary, with some overlap. Lightroom is a better, more photographer-oriented version of Adobe Bridge and Adobe Camera Raw, both of which are found in Photoshop.

Lightroom is a parametric editor, meaning it is rules-based. It is primarily global in nature, meaning that though local adjustments can be done using the linear gradient, radial gradient and adjustment brush, these are limited and difficult to apply to small areas. This is what Photoshop excels at.

Others may suggest differently, you don't need Lightroom for image optimization. Photoshop is the complete package. The content-aware fill and scale tools are not in Lightroom. There are no resize - enlarge tools in lightroom. You can not focus stack in Lightroom, do composites or blend multiple images, no special effects, text tools, layer masks, patch, selection, in LR. No tools for art work, brushes, textures, etc. You can grow out of Lightroom but you will grow into Photoshop.

For about $10/month, you can get both in the Adobe Creative Cloud. They're no longer selling PS as a separate product.

I'd suggest trying the Creative Cloud for $10/month. You'll get LR5 and photoshop 2014, this will allow you to play and evaluate both tools and after a month or 2 you can decide which you like better or whether you want both, and you're only out $20 or so.

I've had Photoshop CC for a while now and use the package daily.

Have fun.

I would do the $9.99 cloud and get both. While Lightroom is extremely good and very easy to learn, it doesn't do everything that Photoshop does (especially in fine retouching) and by doing the cloud you can have and learn both. I have spent the last year learning Lightroom and, while I don't know everything about it, Lightroom has made development of my professional photos and I am learning both Photoshop and Lightroom as an on going project. There are lots of free and some pay sites available for learning both (not to mention classes). And the there is not a good reason to commit to a 1 year subscription. (Since you get both for the $9.99).
If we were talking buying the software and installing it (CS6 vs Lightroom) I would go with Lightroom only but Adobe is or seams to be moving from that option.

Might want to start a new thread on this, but to answer your question I copy to a new folder which I name on the fly during the import process, and I do not use copy as dng as a rule. Only time I do dng is when I am looking at students' work and their cameras are newer and not yet supported by my version of LR, like when the Nikon D610 came out. Both the original raw file and the dng edit equally in LR.

When I insert my sd card, LR starts and asks If I want to import. It shows all of the photos on the card and if it thinks some are duplicates of a previous shoot is "unchecks" them. At that point you can either recheck, uncheck others and then import. At this point the images are copied to (I use Windows 7 but have moved the MY Pictures to my 4tb D drive) My Pictures into a folder with of that shooting date (2014-09-17 etc) then as you "develop the photo it ads a "side car" to the photo with all of the adjustments. The Photo itself is still a raw file (in my case .nef) and can be copied to another computer if you want. (My wife and I share some raw files and some files I give her with the side car. The side car is a .xmp file. You can export any or all as .jpg .tif or png. and all can be worked in Photoshop too. On my D drive under the my pictures folder are as follows.. 2014 then subfolders with each photo date. All you have to do is remember or note the date you took a group of photos.

I think you can get both for ten bucks a month, so why not? I took a community college course in photo editing, and learned more than I ever could by just experimenting and reading books. Having an expert handy to answer questions and explain things was invaluable.

Paintshop Pro X7 Ultimate is equal to Lightroom and Photoshop and costs about half! There is nothing that either of the Adobe Products can do that Paintshop Pro cannot do! Check out that!
