I've used cell phones since they were first available. My first ones were bag phones, big and bulky. I've used just about all the vendors, and have had Tracfone for the last seven or eight years. I am not a heavy user anymore (retired) and get three month's of service for $19.99. It always works and the phone was $10.00. They also have fancier ones available with internet capabilities.

I do not like dealing with their customer service (India based?), so I do everything online.

I have been looking at Consumer Cellular, Trac Phone and Net 10. I don't mind smaller companies either.

We use Net 10 for $25 a month at 1000 minutes in Idaho it's not always easy to find a service that stays connected , but have had no trouble with this service ....good luck...

I'm a wine drinking cell phone user. I have a go phone (pay as you go account) with ATT for My iPhone. 10 cents per min. No internet. My phone costs me $100 per year. I buy 250 minutes every 90 days. The unused rolls over. Friends & relatives have learned not to call to talk about the weather....they get to the point. AND surprise! The saved $400 per years funds my wine hobby ;o

My two cents.....if you spend all day glued to your cell phone and you look like a Borg of sorts I would suggest a Cricket phone or similar.
If you don't use it a lot then Consumer Cellular or similar is best.

I am definitely in the light user category. Had a android phone for 3 months now and still have bothered hooking up to the net. lol.

I too am a light user. 95% of the time I use my home phone. only 2 people have my cell number, + I only turn it on when I need to. for me the $100.00 per year is worth it.

Depends on your location, which you fail to disclose. I dumped Verizon cell plans and use simple mobile. $25 per month, unlimited talk and text. Pay as you go, no contracts. So. Ca.

Thanks Eric. Although I am also currently in socal, I need CDMA coverage ie using Verizon network. Simple Mobile is GMS ie At&t which doesn't have great coverage here.

Hi Onquest, I had Verizon but they charged me double so, after much going back and forth, I dropped them. I signed up with Consumer Cellular, got just as good coverage, was much cheaper and was satisfied. After a time, I went back to Verizon because my friends and family have it. Now, Verizon so screwed up my account, although I'm paying dearly, every time I go to use my cell phone, it tells me I have to buy minutes. Needless to say, I dread calling their CS as so often said on their FB page, Verizon sucks.

Good luck.

Last fall, I went online to pay my Verizon Bill. It would not take my payment, so I looked up my bill online. It showed a $1,400 payment the month before. My bill for the month before was about $69.00 and I had paid it. I called Verizon several times and told them my problem. Eventually they removed the $1,400 payment credited to my account incorrectly, so I was able to pay my bill online. Trouble is...by that point my bill was overdue and they accessed me a late fee. I know I could have recontacted them and fought it, but after hours of hold time over the 1400 bucks I was in no mood to deal with them for a five or ten dollar fee.

Just fyi all Tracfones ending with c such as LG505c use Verizon and Sprint cell network, those ending with G use AT&T and T-Mobile network.

Everybody will have a different story on verizon,,, I noticed that very quickly on a couple of the posts below..
I have been a Verizon Customer for a little over 15 years... Personally I have not had any problems with them....I was inquiring of getting a "OUT OF COUNTRY" (canada) setup for my phone and the person I was dealing with at Verizon asked... How much do you expect to use the phone while you are in Canada and I replied "Once a day in the evening) She said... Well, Don't bother with this plan, the Extra charges for the calls will be much less than the plan...

But in answer to your question... WHAT are you going to use the phone for...??? Do you need all the crap that the iphones etc. have on them now.....

I have been using a BASIC tracfone for 8 years. It has never given me any trouble, I bought a double minutes plan and now every 90 days I buy 60mins for $20.00, get 120 minutes and go on my merry way. I have never used up all my minutes. OH, my phone does have texting...
Good luck...

Mike

I too am on Verizon and have been since 1993/95. Bill just keeps going up and up and the service is not that great. CS just ignores you! I go in to talk about changing phone(s) and without talking details (as if they don't have time to mess with "talk" about service, etc). I've been looking into Affinity Cellular through AAA membership offers. Any on have Affinity Cellular and if so, what's your opinion please?
I have 8 grandchildren and they love to text instead of calls!! And my 3 daughters tell me to get with it dad, flip phones are on the way out!

Like I said to the OP, there are many opinions about Verizon... Personally I Could not be happier with it..... and not having much contact with Customer Service I cannot comment too much with that.... EXCEPT FOR ONE TIME

I received a call from Verizon saying that my wife could switch her iphone (5 I think) and for Sales Tax she could update to what ever the NEWEST one was and a 2 year contract ($8.00 cheaper than what we had, same stuff)
Sounded good to me.. SO being the Man of the House I said yes, agreed to it over the phone "YOU DO UNDERSTAND this is a binding contract" yes I Do.. Bingo the deal was done.

I rushed into the living room with the good news for the wife and she said. I don't want a new one!! I said why?? She said because Kelly (our daughter) gave me this one and I cant get rid of it. Hummmmmmmm wattamigonnadonow.....hummmmm

I Called Verizon and after two service reps who said they thought that I could not opt out since I had AGREED to the Binding Contract.... By this time I had received an email.. YOUR NEW iPhone has been Shipped...> WOWOWOW....

Anyway... The third person was a very nice lady, spoke perfect English and we were on the phone for over 45minutes going from place to place to try and get me out of the BINDING CONTRACT...... Finally she said... I have got it... you have been removed from the obligation, and when the phone arrives, just refuse it and everything is well...

I DID and IT WAS..................

Great service.. YMMD

You might check into Straight Talk or Republic Wireless. My wife had a contract with Verizon and my contract just expired with them. I was surprised I was able to get a no contract everything plan for $30 a month. Of course that was with no phone upgrade. Just keeping my older IPhone which was fine with me as I don't need the lates tech yet, I can wait till the newer phones get cheaper, but one and still use the $30 Verizon plan.

Thanks everyone for your input. It's a done deal. I am now with Tracphone and I'm hoping to make 600 minutes last three months.

Straight talk can be renewed on the internet via a card card.

The cost is 249.00 for six months showing a $20.00 dollar savings.

I don't use Straight talk but have several friends that due. They seem to love it. Claim it's cheaper only if you are not looking at a family plan.

Whatever plan you do with you have to check there coverage map before you sign the contract.

I use on tracphone and as mentioned cost me about 10 bucks a month. I run out of days before I run out of minuets. I wish I had her money, instead she has mine.

My wife uses that V company spends about 50 buck a month. A waste of money. But she want's to look cool with a smart phone that she never knows where it is.
