How I Fixed Lens Creep

In today's day and age there is no excuse for Nikon, Canon, or any of the other lens manufacturers to throw a lens on the market that has lens creep. Think about how much you pay for these lenses. It is extremely poor engineering and lets me know that the manufacturers don't care about the consumer. I bought a Tamron once that suffered from lens creep and that me decide that I never buy another lens that does no matter how good the other specs are. Really there is no reason in the world we should put up with that type of lousy quality at the prices we pay for lenses. Let them sit on the shelves, let Canon and Nikon use them as doorstops around the office. Man -- I feel better now that I got that out but I had to do it.

I have a 18-200 Canon Lens that has a terrible case of lens creep. I did a search on this site and went and bought a lens band. That did no good.

I bought a roll of Gorilla Tape, like duct tape, but it isn't. I got black and put 3 pieces around the extended lens and presto, no lens creep.

Maybe this solution will help someone.

Be careful about gorilla tape! Leaves a residue. Instead use gaffer tape, which leaves almost no residue and can be reused often. It comes in black and gray.

I bought a lens band from Adorama for my Sigma 18-250mm.
Works great. I can set the zoom at any length, and it stays there.

I set it up same as Gene51 :)

Another solution as I had a Nikon 18-200 that had lens creep. I found one of those Livestrong rubber type bracelets (it was yellow so good for the Nikon) and put it around the lens and no more problems with lens creep.

That Gorilla Tape is fantastic stuff. I have used it numerous times around my house and boat. So far, I have used it once to fix a camera. When the lens barrel cover on my Canon SX50 came off, I wrapped one layer around the barrel, stuck the cover back on, and no problems since. I can think of another Potential use by photographers; someone shooting a paid wedding with an entry level DSLR can cover the "Rebel" or D3100 decal with it

Is that the new Sigma 18-250 OS with Macro Mode? I had the first model 18-250mm OS no macro and it did not have lens creep. I really liked that lens -- sorry to hear it has the creeps.

My model has a zoom lock, but only at one position. It has OS and the macro goes to about 1:2. Every time I think I need a new lens, I change my mind.

They go to all the trouble to put a zoom lock on a lens but they can't just make it so it doesn't creep? Crazy or lazy if you ask me.

Setting up the lens band correctly will work. Half on the zoom ring the other half on the barrel, at an angle.

That is the best answer. Putting on wrong does nothing or it makes it hard to move. Put it on and see how much is on the zoom room and how much on the barrel to your satisfaction.
