Hello to all !

While plunking around on my keyboard keys, I just now was looking at not so popular software for post processing photos ~ simply because most of us have more popular post processing software such as Lightroom, etc. Anyway, I've just run across software named "Gimp" and can see that it is free..

Well, I haven't downloaded Gimp, but was wondering if anyone in our group has given it a try and want to know what they think about it ? Is Gimp something to use now in then when a guy wants to play around with something different, or is it something to stay away from ?

Thanks to those who respond :-D ~Doug~

Although I don't use it, it is a very popular program among members here. There are quite a few tutorials available online. For the price, you can't beat it.

Doug, it's a fine program, but with a very convoluted user interface.

I just recently found another free program, but with a bit of a learning curve. That one is Lightzone.

It's similar to, but different than, LR.

Gimp has been around for a long long time... it is more of a Photoshop clone alternative then a Lightroom alternative.

It is pretty complex, but if you put in the time with it it can do some amazing things. Definately find some decent tutorials to get started.

From what I remember it is not real straightforward, but very powerful, and there will be loads of references on the internet for it.

It has come a long way, but it will be a little slower then Photoshop, but as you said, the price is right! :)

I have it and I use it when I get tired of my Adobe Potoshop Elements. It is very similar to photoshop.

Now if you are on a Mac or a LINUX machine, or even run a LINUX distro in a virtual machine on your Windows box - and want a freeware Lightroom clone... check out Darktable....not real bad at all...

Hi Doug,

I got it and use it occasionally. Very powerful.
Somewhat difficult but I am very satisfied that I downloaded it.

You should try it if you have time to play around with it.

This looks like something I would really like. I always wanted a book on Gimp that was organized like a programming book. Just list each function with a description of what it does and an example or two. Most Gimp books I look at are written like a novel and keep referencing Photoshop. Very frustrating for someone like me to learn from.

Thanks Morning Star!

I use GIMP most of the time. I was taught how to use it by my 11 year-old great grandson who used it at school. Obviously it is much easier to use than most people realise. For fun I put the tutorials on this forum. You'll find them here: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-69708-1.html#top

Other members give their opinion of the tutorials within the forum.

There is a lot of positive things to say regarding Open Source programs... they are free... continuous updating... use PS plugins... some plugins that are not accommodated by commercial programs (mathmap)... Gimp is like a team both developers and users.

Do I use it, no, I have PSPro X6 (started with X-2), not expensive and in the beginning because GIMP was more complicated!!

Another fine example of a free program is www.Faststone.org

The current version of GIMP is 2.8. I have used the previous version of 2.6 and thought it did very well, and the current version is supposed to have some excellent improvements. As others have said, you will have to invest some time to learn the software, but that is true for any software you would want to work with. There is software on the market that you will have to pay for that has less functionality than GIMP.
