I was taking pictures at a memorial service of all places. It was my father-in-law's service; he passed away Christmas afternoon in Indonesia.

Anyway, the wife tells me to bring the camera. She keeps nudging me when people are speaking at the front of the church 'take their picture, take their picture'.

When we are singing she has me set the camera on auto and pass it to someone in the back row. O...K....

I usually bounce my flash and am always scanning rooms for appropriate locations.

Anyway, after the service some guy comes up to me and says 'wow, that is some camera you got there. What is that, a Nikon?"

I reply that it is the D3000 (not mentioning that it is the bottom rung of the Nikon ladder)

He starts going on about how it bets that I can get some great bird shots, no matter how fast they are flying.
I tell him that this is true, but one great shot would require taking over 100 shots and a bit of luck.

He seemed almost sad that it was not all the camera. I may have cost Nikon a sale.

On another note, my daughter had an entry for the science fair and I took the shots for her board. I set up a black backdrop and bounced the flash while overpowering the ambient light. I liked the results for the most part.
She just brought her board back and I asked her how it went. She said she got a good grade and everyone asked her if she hired paparazzi to take the shots.

She told them 'My daddy took them, he is a professional photographer'. I tried to tell her that I am not, but in her eyes.....

I love those stories, good reading, thanks for sharing!

I'm sorry folks but cameras have a lot to do with good pictures. Go through some pictures from the instamatic days 1960's the 127 film size days 1950's Older than that they had big negatives and did B&W film with more latitude. Anyway you will find all kinds of over, under exposed pictures not to mention out of focus. And these are the ones that were kept. If you put todays cameras on auto it will take care of all this no matter how bad you are you just have to focus. The icon settings will set the camera the same way most of us "non iconers" do 90% of the time. For most people the camera makes a big differance. -Dave

When my son was about 11, he once said, "Daddy is the smartest man in the world!" As he grew older, I think I must have gotten dumber. He is now 35 and has little 2 boys of his own. I think he too will someday get dumber. Anyway, as long as your child believes it, relish the thought!
Kids are great, but grandchildren give you revenge!

Great stories!! Dads and Grandpas should all be heros to their kids and grandkids. I'll add one more story.

My oldest daughter with 4 kids lives in Flagstaff. She got a D40 as a Christmas present from my Son-I-L about 6 years ago and started shooting the kids. She has no clue how the camera works, still says so. But, some of her images are really good. Dad got her a 70-300mm VR a couple years ago and she got even better images. Last year for her birthday & Christams dad got her a D5100, well now she's really hummimg but still says she has no idea how the camera works. She shot some images of a Rodeo with the D5100 that were just plain outstanding.

I think she's still playing dad "like a fiddle" like she did when she was a little girl, with; "I don't know the camera works but I am getting better and better pictures with this new Nikon"!!

Now Grandpa just got the oldest grand daughter a Nikon S3100 for her 10th birthday in Feb. My daughter was telling me how Haile (grand daughter) was always wanting to borrow her camera.

So now dad and grandpa can be played "like a fiddle" by both my oldest daughter and grand daughter!! But I love it, that's want we are for, without kids and grandkids life would be a terrible bore!! Well, maybe not that bad, I would have more $ to play with!!

Forgot to mention I have another daughter that just graduated from UF (Go Gators!!) and 2 sons, they all are experts at "playing the fiddle". And, my wife "plays the whole darn orchestra"!!

I can hear the "music" now!

I know several photojournalist who routinely put black tape on their cameras..i.e., over the white "Canon" letters, etc. so the gear looks much older and not too gooooood...
I also saw an ad recently for a type of "skin" you could put over your DSLR which not only disguised it, so to speak, but also gave a better rubbery grip...
I kind of like the look...

No matter how good you are you learn something new all the time. If you say you don't then I pity you!

dont know if I ever though my parents were ever smart when I was younger it wasnt till after I left home that I thought my parents were smarter than I gave them credit for, with age comes wisdom, with wisdom comes age, sometimes...and grandchildren comes from not strangling out our children, never new grandchildren could be such fun..but my mother said the best thing about grandchildren is they go home...after you spoil them...that is where we get our revenge...

I was told the the same line some years ago but for a different reason. I had the camera mounted on a tripod photographing the San Francisco skyline and two youngsters showed great interest in my camera, me being a nice guy explained some functions. I put my gear in the car and drove away, stopped for coffee on my way home, took me about ten minutes, you can guess what happened, I was followed, the trunk was broken into on a busy street and my beloved F5 Nikon with four lenses were gone. Lucky I was insured, the only thing I still regret is that I forgot to claim my 16mm Nikkor.
