I was taking pictures at a memorial service of all places. It was my father-in-law's service; he passed away Christmas afternoon in Indonesia.
Anyway, the wife tells me to bring the camera. She keeps nudging me when people are speaking at the front of the church 'take their picture, take their picture'.
When we are singing she has me set the camera on auto and pass it to someone in the back row. O...K....
I usually bounce my flash and am always scanning rooms for appropriate locations.
Anyway, after the service some guy comes up to me and says 'wow, that is some camera you got there. What is that, a Nikon?"
I reply that it is the D3000 (not mentioning that it is the bottom rung of the Nikon ladder)
He starts going on about how it bets that I can get some great bird shots, no matter how fast they are flying.
I tell him that this is true, but one great shot would require taking over 100 shots and a bit of luck.
He seemed almost sad that it was not all the camera. I may have cost Nikon a sale.
On another note, my daughter had an entry for the science fair and I took the shots for her board. I set up a black backdrop and bounced the flash while overpowering the ambient light. I liked the results for the most part.
She just brought her board back and I asked her how it went. She said she got a good grade and everyone asked her if she hired paparazzi to take the shots.
She told them 'My daddy took them, he is a professional photographer'. I tried to tell her that I am not, but in her eyes.....

Well, it was actually my mother in law. She wasn't on stage with us because they were divorced and she is married.
As for how they turned out; she took a couple of shots with strange framing, got bored and put the camera down.

This reminds me of a story I heard once about a famous photographer having dinner in a very upscale restaurant. The very famous chef at this establishment just happened to be a amateur photographer. When the chef heard that this famous photographer was in his place he rushed out to introduce himself. He tells the famous photographer that he has been fan of his for a long time and really enjoys his work. He then asks him what type of camera equipment he uses. Upon hearing about the camera gear the chef replies. " So that is how you take all those wonderful pictures". The chef went back to the kitchen. This remark really ticked off the famous photographer and so when he finished eating he went to the kitchen to thank the chef for such a wonderful meal. He asked the Chef, " so tell me about your kitchen and the things you use to prepare such wonderful meals". When the chef was finished, the photographer remarked, " So that's how you produce such good food". Moral of the story, there are cheap tools as well as expensive tools. Neither one will help us until we learn how to use them correctly.
