Ok, this thing hung there for about two weeks before some birds finally noticed it and then they seemed happy to eat plain peanut butter.

Now I know why it just hung there with out being noticed...Who Knew That Birds Can't Smell or Taste??? That was news to me!

This was your problem, When you hang your feeder you have to decide weather you are feeding a northern bird or a southern bird, southern birds want there feeder pointing south, northern birds want there feeder hanging north,If you hang it looking both directions they will not eat . problem solved , do you get it now. thank you .

No kidding, was starting to wonder about these birds around here. I refilled it several times but I noticed that I never saw a bird eating on it if there was a feeder spot open. So since they can't smell or taste, I guess preference comes down to a matter of texture.

Yes ! That would save P/B There are not many east and west birds, and few there are would enjoy there P/J a lot more. very good idea.
