Wrr...any luck with that peanut butter yet?

No, I'm pissed. I even shut the cats up in the garage all day and still not one taker. So I thought I'd better check out the peanut butter again but after two more PB&J sandwiches, I determined that the PB is just fine.

Tomorrow I'm going to do what a couple have said here, roll the thing in seed and see what happens then.

Also, I can't believe that Birds and Blooms would give me a bum steer but at this point not sure I'll be reading anymore of them.

you could try hanging some handy wipes next to the peanut butter, they could have a gentleman friend they would like to go an visit . After breakfast. I am just thinking out loud. I guess I am not much help.

I like how you make PB and J for yourself as well. After all these years I still enjoy a PB and J.

Write to Birds & Blooms and ask them, what's up? One time I heard peanut butter is great to put on mouse traps..they can't resist peanut butter, that trap sat in the basement for 3 days...no takers. As soon as I took the peanut butter off and put velvita cheese on it one night and the next morning, I caught the little basterd! Go figure!

Why don't your use a search engine and look up peanut butter feeders. Use the image search. That is what I did when I saw the seed on the peanut butter. Might give you some ideas. I like your idea and will use it myself. thanks.

So you're saying I should switch to Velveeta cheese? This is kind of like fishing, sometimes you have to change baits.

No takers yet, but also, no dead birds. Yet.

Now before someone turns me in to homeland security for cruelty to animals, get out yer Birds And Blooms issue January 2011. Page 9, bottom right, just to the left of the apple picture. It says Peanut Butter there and states that the biggest fans is "too many to name". Now that sounds like every bird that comes in my yard.

I have an idea though. Maybe hanging it on a string where it would be best situated for photographic purposes wasn't the best of plans. Think I'll move it to a branch where I can fasten it down so it's not bobbing all over the place in the breeze. Right now though I have to go watch Happy Yipee Yehey. Google it...

I read that article and I am going to try it this spring. I love that magazine.

Well, annoying seed bell indeed. I mean really, look at that seed bell. That thing should be like a beacon in the dark for every hungry bird within two miles!

I'm going into day 3 here thinking that if I don't see some kind of activity soon, I'm just going to salvage the PB cause there's enough on there to make a PB&J.

I really went to some effort to try to make this happen. Just getting the pinecone was an ordeal. There's two pine trees in my yard and when I decided to do this, I go out thinking there should be a stray pinecone laying about under the trees. Of course there isn't a pinecone anywhere on the ground. In fact, there's only one pinecone visible anywhere and it's still hanging in the tree way up at the top.

So I go in the garage and spend about an hour hunting for a 12 foot telescoping handle for a paint roller. Finally I find it but just to discover that it still leaves me several feet short of reaching the cone up there. I drag out my 8 foot step ladder. I end up standing on the very top of the thing and even then I can just barely reach the cone. Luckily I have good balance and after several wild swings I knock the cone to the ground. Wasn't much of a cone either but I wasn't going to let that stop me.

Then after searching the kitchen over a few times, I can't find the peanut butter. Finally I call my wife who knew right where it was. So my point is, there was considerable effort that went into this project. Of course the whole time I'm chuckling to myself thinking about all the good pictures I was about to get to post on UHH.

It wasn't long before dejection and rejection set in...

as it is today
as it is today...

Ok, added the seed. Didn't have the black niger seed so used what was on hand. Realizing the whole time that this now drastically changes the outcome of a PB&J should this project come to that.

Roll it in some black oil sunflower seed and instead if hanging it stick it on a branch so the birds can perch

That'd probably be good. Kind of strange, since I put that out there, really haven't seen that many birds. The first day there was still some around the feeder but now I only saw a couple of birds at the feeder yesterday and just one lonely female Cardinal this morning. Before that the feeder was getting hit daily with groups of a dozen or two.

It does seem that as it's been getting warmer, there is less birds coming around. It's been in the mid 60's the past few days. Not sure that I am really crazy about this 'mild' winter.

edit: I don't stand and watch this thing all day, it's not that interesting....so I may miss a bird or two

As it gets warmer, more insects come out, so they may be going after those to build up protein for the nesting season.

Wen I went to college, I saw a few guys feeding squirrels peanut M&Ms. I think it gave them a sugar high.
