And what software do you use to move the files to the server?

As my post says 'Windows Storage Server 2008 R2', its a RAID system and has hot swaple(spelling) disks. ie if one disk fails no need to shut the system down just pull the bad disk insert the new one and the system will re-write the lost data to the new disk..RAID. This system is fully automatic and will only back-up what you program it too. You can access your data from any where as it is wi-fi connected.

I use FreeFileSync to backup to two external drives. As it's name implies it is free. One drive is always kept in a water tight fireproof safe. I'm currently using the manual version of FreeFileSync but there is a version that backs up in real time. Since I've only been using it a short time I haven't taken the time to figure out the real time version yet.

Before that I was using Windows 8 history file however after I had been using it for awhile I discovered that it wasn't backing up everything I asked it to and files were missing from the backup. Don't know if it was a Windows or operator error but I switched and FreeFileSync is working perfectly so far.

I read through the replies and found something that was not mentioned. Everyone talks about hard drives but nobody talked about solid state drives while much more expensive they are also many times more reliable than mechanical drives. Again as I am finding out more money LOL

Even with SSD you still need Backup system. i upgraded my IMAC with SSD and I am still using Time Machine (for incremental backup) and Carbon Copy Cloner (for external boot incase has problem with internal SSD).

Although SSD is about 10X more expensive than Hard drive. It is worth the extra cost - about $400 - $500 for 1 TB and $200 to $250 for 512GB. Boot time and access data is much faster.

Unfortunately backup isn't as simple as what you use to backup, there is also where you backup and other questions you need to answer. Here is a post I wrote about it.

As far as the MAC question, Time Machine works really great, providing you also have an off-site backup. I also like GoodSync.

C48, will time machine handle backups to multiple drives which may be at different states of backup?

Carbon Copy Cloner
Why what?
1. Why do a backup?
Bad things can happen.
2. Why is Carbon Copy Cloner the best software/
a. Because you are creating a clone. Everything from your drive
is there, so you can boot off of it, take the clone to another
location, etc. Also a clone will be the same size as what you are
cloning; with Time Machine you can fill up your backup drive
without realizing it until it is too late.
b. Because you can make a clone any time you wish, or
schedule it for one of more times per time interval
c. It's free.
What is the best software? br Carbon Copy Cloner... (show quote)

Does it do incremental/net change backups after the first clone, or does it do a complete rewrite/clone with every use?

As I noted on Aug. 8, 2014 at 13:14:29, it is done incrementally.

Ok. Can you talk about how the software end works? How easy is it to setup, what options are available, is the software available as a standalone, etc...
Thanks

Either, depending on how you set it's preferences. The free version you have to manually start. The paid version you can set up a calendar for back up intervals. The same applies for Super Duper for Mac also.

Often I see backup software discussed, but usually as a part of a thread on backing up generally or a discussion of hard drives and/or cloud backup.

What I want to find is the best (most functional balanced with ease of use) backup software for photography. It should do automated incremental backups and (possibly) maintain some level of historical versions, unless there is a consensus that it is not necessary (I would think if you do a lot of RAW work version backup is not as big a deal.)

The discussion can (and should) include the pros and cons of doing photographic backup as part of the overall backup approach vs. having a separate approach specifically for photography related files.

Any thoughts?

I use SyncBack. The free version has everything you need. If you have a need for more advanced features, you can get one of the two paid versions. You can set it up to do sync, mirror or incremental backups, and you can fully describe all the conditions and exceptions you want. It has performed flawlessly over the past 12 yrs that I have been using it. it was first released in 2003.

That sounds interesting, similar feature set to Carbo Copy Cloner. Thank you, I’ll check it out.

WOW! I started this thread over five years ago. But it is an issue that deserves continued and updated answers.

Thanks
