Hello James,
I have purchased from both and have not had any issues.
I think that any purchase you make through them would be fair.

Now if I can just find out when my new D810 will be shipped from B&H!! :)

Boy do I envy you, I wish I could realistically dream of getting a D810 no matter how long I had to wait. Thanks for your recommendations and I hope you receive your camera soon.

Thanks! I have been saving and planned an upgrade to the D4s, but I'm doing more video. The D810 is cheaper than the D4s and has pretty good video specs. So I decided to see if it meets my needs.
Good luck on your search for a camera. Lots of good advice here on the forum!
Just ask!

Buying mail order is good if you know exactly what you want. But if you are considering a D7100 or D5300, then I think you could use some help. While both are DX cameras, they have significant differences.

I suggest that, if possible, you make this initial purchase from a local camera shop. A good one will have a reasonable selection of used gear, and can work with you to get the kind of camera that will meet your needs and goals.

And if they are lame, then at least you will have laid hands on some cameras and will be better informed.

I have had a D7100 for some time now and I can tell you it is one fine camera. I use a Nikon 18-200 f/3.5 with it and, frankly, it stays on all the time. Good luck and have fun.

Thank you. I did a lot of looking up and comparing features and the D7100 came out looking very good.

I have been working with cameras since I had a Pentax back in the '70's. Now I have been digital for 15 years and following UHH for several years. We all mostly endorse B&H Photo and Adorama as the two most reputable and reliable, and their prices are good, they are not overpriced. I have bought from both, they are good. There are others, but again these are the "big two" Also if you don't know a lot about cameras, just pick a Nikon or Canon DSLR, pick your price range, they are all fine cameras, I have 2 Canons, and my latest is a Nikon. There are others, but unless you are very well informed you may get something you won't like. I have seen samples and seen other photographers with other brands and wish I had one, but again, you really have to know what you are looking for, they vary widely.

I joined up to the group a few months back and follow it regularly. We have many talented and knowledgable people here. I am going to be looking to purchase a new, refurbished or used camera as soon as I can. I am retired and don't have a lot of extra money to work with so I need to be careful. I would like to know, what company would be the best to buy from. I have looked at some cameras advertised by "B&H Photo" and also some from "Adorama" as well as some others. I have had no personal experience with any of them. Does anyone here have any experience doing business with these two? Are they trustworthy and reliable? Also are there any other companies you have worked with and would recommend so I could check and see what they have to offer. I would go to a camera store locally if we had any, but we don't have any now. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated, I just want to be sure I am dealing with someone reputable. Thanks. :)

I shop at B&H. When I had a problem with equipment from Sigma and Olympus B&H stepped in and was very helpful.
I loved my Nikon camera, but got tired of having of having all that weight especially with back problems so I switched to mirror less. If interested check Fuji X-E2, X-T1.

Adorama and B&H are both very good stores to purchase from. Have used them both and no problems what so ever. As others have said, Amazon and Cameta are also good.

Either are just fine. I order most of my stuff through Amazon, and have bought things at the Dodd Camera store. You might get a small variation in price, but generally very small, a few dollars. The stores are required to post vendor "list prices". It wasn't long ago, perhaps 2 years, that places like Amazon were 5% or so less than a camera store, but no longer. Most offer free shipping.

You might want to consider used equipment, but remember, you will not get the warranty, as most of the used equipment is out of warranty.

If you want a Canon 20D, heck, I would sell you one for a couple hundred, no warranty though. Works fine. I stepped up to the 5D, so my 20D is not used at all.

I have dealt with Adorama and they were good. Also have purchased from Camera Cottage and got service and advise. He is a regular here on UHH.

I have bought from B&H, Adorama and Amazon. I like all 3 but I like B&H the best just because they seem more customer friendly. You can call them anytime and ask questions. Watch Amazon to make sure you are dealing with American Warranties. If the price is cheap, read the small print.

Hi James. It might be a good thing to take a ride to a camera store. It will be a fun vacation.:)
Just to touch and feel a few cameras once you decide on one. The way it feels in your hand is a big deal. If it doesn't feel right you will never be happy.
Also, PM MTshooter and pick is brain. Very nice guy. He helped me pick my first camera, and now my second one which should be coming soon!:):)

Being new to photography, if you have a local store with unbiased sales staff with a variety of cameras to try, it's good to have a relationship with them. I support local shops when possible but they are none left where I live. For mail order B&H is tops. They still offer a real catalog which I use as a sort of reference, and they carried things I could not find elsewhere.

Nice to have you with us. Both companies are extremely reliable. I have done business with both and will continue to do so as they are very responsive to any inquiries and have fast, reliable shipping. Cameta Camera is another web site seller that I have heard great things about and seem to have great deals on factory refurbished equipment. Others on this site have dealt with them and recommend them, as well. Good luck and let us know what you decide to purchase.
