Are you shooting in low light? Sometimes the auto focus can't focus in insufficient light. Also, are you shooting with flash? That may be contributing to the problem.

Do you by any chance have the lens set on manual focus?

No I double checked this. I returned the camera last night I hope not to have the same issue with the new camera. Charging battery so we will have to wait and see...

What does the flash do? How would this prevent it from taking a picture on automatic settings? Shouldn't the camera always take the picture on automatic? Or is it really telling me the shot is impossible to capture ISO coming out at 3200 shutter 1/60 and can't remember the apperature it was saying, but It would not take the picture. The green focus light was blinking in the viewfinder (not sure yet what that means)? I am working on reading the manual before I begin to play again...

I would definitely make sure the lens AF is activated. I just got my T2i550 with kit lens and EF 50-250....I absolutely love it, however the first one I bought the autofocus just didn't work at all...I was able to return it with a full refund...got one thru walmart online and it is the bomb (as my grandaughters would say)...anyway lots of good tips here...good luck with camera and baby!!

call the canon hot line and they will help you set up the camera. Is your lens on M and not auto? all sorts of things can be happening.

CALL CANON

Hello,
I just bought the Canon T3i and I am having dificulty with it and really wondering if something could be wrong with the camera. I have now on numerous occasions tried shooting random photos and it doesn't take the picture on automatic or manual modes. I am about to have a baby and can't miss that special moment. What should I do? When it does take the picture they are awesome compared to my old point and shoot.

My questions is did anyone else have this issue? I am considering returning it and getting the Sony A33 now because my husband is not happy we have to manual focus for videos as well. Why are they discontinuing the A33? Is the A33 comparable to quality of Canon?

Any thoughts from anyone with either of these cameras will be greatly appreciated.

When you press the shutter release button half way down, the lens focusing mechanism will activate and try to focus on something in the frame. This action works with the lens set to Auto. (You should see a slider or a rocker switch on the lens body marked Auto and Manual.) When the lens achieves focus, the camera will sound a beep.

I agree with the suggestion of your taking the camera to a local camera store for guidance.

I suggest you also look for a nearby workshop giving basic instruction in DSLR operation. The camera store may offer a workshop, or could steer you to one. This instruction will provide you a good foundation in DSLR operation and instill a measure of confidence to further your camera and lens use skills.

Good luck.

Alycia,
Could you please tell me what the settings are on the camera? You could have all the wrong settings and if so the camera is searching for the correct amount of light, something to focus on or a variety of other things. I have seen this camera in action, and it works very well. Reread your manual and see if you can figure out what is wrong. I will download the manual for it and try to work it out with you. I just downloaded the manual, so you can ask if you can get confused.

George

I would also try removing the lens you have on there, and put it back on again.

Best of luck with the baby!
Now some bad news: a great camera will not make a great photographer--despite what the ads say. Learn the basics, then practice, practice, practice. 8-) ALYN

The camera will not take a picture in automatic mode if you are beyond the capabilities of the camera. IE: if you are too close for the camera to focus.

I bought a 60D a few months ago and have gone through a learning process since. I reached a level of frustration a couple of times over the camera not firing. This was usually do to the camera not being able to focus. I have my focus set to just use the center point, and one time I was testing a cable release and had the camera pointing at my coffee mug. I finally realized that a piece of white ceramic does not offer contrast for the camera to focus on. I shoved a tube of chapstick in front of the mug, and the camera focused happily and snapped away!

Now I have a nice shot of a tube of chapstick. I'll print it out for a price if you want to hang it on your wall. ;)
