Hello,
I just bought the Canon T3i and I am having dificulty with it and really wondering if something could be wrong with the camera. I have now on numerous occasions tried shooting random photos and it doesn't take the picture on automatic or manual modes. I am about to have a baby and can't miss that special moment. What should I do? When it does take the picture they are awesome compared to my old point and shoot.

My questions is did anyone else have this issue? I am considering returning it and getting the Sony A33 now because my husband is not happy we have to manual focus for videos as well. Why are they discontinuing the A33? Is the A33 comparable to quality of Canon?

Any thoughts from anyone with either of these cameras will be greatly appreciated.

I believe that unless it's got focus...it won't actually take a pic...

So..make sure that you've gotten focus (shutter half way down) and then snap.

If you can describe the actual circumstances under which the camera does not take a picture we might be able to help. Depending on the situation and settings, the camera might not be able to lock focus, or there may be some other problem with a combination of light, subject, and mode.

If you simply step outside and take a picture of the street in broad daylight, does it work ?

If you come inside, set it on AUTO (green box) and try to take a picture in your kitchen or someplace, does the flash pop up and fire?

Without a few more details, it's really hard to say what it is, since we don't know what you have the camera set on, what lens you might be using, or any of the other half-dozen details that would allow a more thorough analysis.

With my D5100, it's the camera. It's telling me "The way you set me, I can't take the picture "

I orginally had it set on manual mode inside and it would not focus properly using the 55-200mm lens. I am guessing this is due to lighting issues. Then to test it out I took it to a bright room during the day also using indoor light set the green automatic setting and tried to take a photo of a random object a chair as I was trying to set it up to take pictures/portraits on the tripod. Using the kit lens 55-85mm lens. The flash does pop up and it appears to be focusing fine the green circle light in the view finder lights up but no picture is taken. I hold the shutter half way down then the rest of the way and no picture. Very disappointing. It does not make shutter release sound.

Why does it seem like the camera has a hard time focusing automatically is this something I should forget about and just use manual focus...I am just not used to this yet.

What lens are you using?
What is the distance from the camera and the subject?
What is the ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture setting?
Do you have auto focus on?

As you can see there are a ton of questions about what could be going on.

It sounds odd that it happens with either lens. If you have a Ritz or other camera store handy, I'd take it there and ask them to test it with a store lens. They might be able to isolate the problem. Any more speculation by us is probably pointless.

Make sure your lens cap is removed from your lens, and also try pushing the blue display button, located beside the trash can (Delete) button to see if you can view a photo that was taken.

I have a funny feeling that the OP has the camera to close to the subject for the lens they have on the camera. Both lenses listed start at 55mm focal lenght if she is trying to take a picture of something that is to close the camera will not focus and will not take a picture.

alycia142 try moving your subject further from the camera and see what happends. If this is the problem your camera will focus and you will be able to take the picture. You might need to purchase a lens like the 18-55mm it cost under $200 and will give you a shorter reach, which you are missing currently. (you might be able to find one on craigslist as it is normally the kit lens and people sell them when they upgrade)

Canon doesn't make a 55-85 lens, I think OP mistyped. The kit lens that comes w/most Ti3's is the 18-55.

I bet it's either operator error or a bad camera. She needs to take it somewhere where someone can take a qualified look at it.

I'm sure your answer is yes to the question, is the battery fully charged.

If you are shooting in auto mode the lens also has to be in AF mode. I have made that error.

you might be right...the minimum focus distance for this lens is 43.5" quite a bit...

I would stick with the canon, video focus is no big deal with the right lens you should not focus that much, make sure you are pressing down half way for camera to focus, then shot
canons are great, and much easier to find lens, new and used

I put the odds on TOO CLOSE to SUBJECT you are trying to focus on.
