What lens do you have on your camera now? I think that I saw in the classifieds here on the Hog a 70-300 lens for $300. If you already have the 18-55 it may be a good addition. It sells new for $650 and honestly a well cared for lens is hardly any different than a new lens... Photozone says that this lens tests out close to L glass and has the test reports to back that claim up... I have one and it is very impressive. Not quite as good as my 300mm prime but there are few zooms that can compare with a good prime.

I shoot with the Canon 60D and my go to lens is the Sigma 18-250.

You may have to go back in time a bit. For the wider side, you could look at the Tamron SP 20-40 2.7-3.5 lens on ebay or KEH. Going to the longer side, look at the Tamron SP 28-105 F2.8 - both are great full frame lenses in your range.
